  Melvin stared across the dinner table at Eleanor as she pushed a portion of rice onto her fork with her knife. She lifted the fork and brought it to her lips.   He smiled. "You look great," he said softly.   Eleanor lifted her gaze to meet his. "You don't look so bad yourself." Her expression remained empty, her eyes glinting with an emotion that didn't match her words.   Melvin held her gaze for no longer than a beat before drawing in a long breath and turning to his meal. "You could have told me you were going on vacation outside Brooklyn. Maybe I would have put off everything else to come with you," he said, picking up his cutlery.   "It's just a vacation.
