  I slumbered in the dimly lit room. The twins watched me from a metal bench by the door. My chest rose and fell in slow, steady breaths while the cardiac monitor beeped beside me. Then, suddenly, every sound sharpened. I heard each beep as if it echoed inside my skull. I felt the cold air moving across my skin and the fluids draining into my veins. My breaths quickened as the smell of medicine filled my lungs, the beeps climbing faster and faster.   The girls remained still, unbothered, their eyes fixed on me.   My fingers twitched.
