Chapter 4: The Magnetic Pull of Blue Eyes
Vaishnavi stood frozen; she couldn't understand a word of what Louis was saying as he spoke in German. Finally, he mentioned her name and extended his hand. "Come here, my child," he said in English. Instantly, the entire crowd turned their gaze toward her.
She hadn't expected to be called onto the stage so suddenly. Her body trembled with nerves. Why is he calling me? What did he say just now? she panicked internally. But sensing the warmth in his voice, she calmed her mind and began to walk toward him.
Only the most influential guests and his family were gathered there. As she stepped onto the stage, the crowd cheered and applauded. Though she didn't quite understand the reason for the celebration, she offered a polite, graceful smile.
"Bravo!" Louis proclaimed to the guests before adding, "Enjoy the party!" The crowd began to disperse—some toward the dance floor, others toward the exquisite buffet.
Louis introduced her to a few colleagues before finally leading her to his family. "This is my daughter-in-law, Lara Hilbert, and my son, Robin Hilbert." Lara gave Vaishnavi a subtle, welcoming hug.
Lara looked to be in her 40s and Robin in his 50s, but both looked incredibly youthful and elegant in their Western attire. Lara pointed at Vaishnavi’s outfit. "What a lovely dress! Is this Indian wear?"
Vaishnavi nodded and took a moment to explain the details of her Salwar Kameez. Once they finished talking, Louis turned to his son. "Where is Karl?"
Before Robin could answer, a commanding voice echoed through the air. "I am here."
Everyone turned toward the voice. A young man was walking toward them, and the moment Vaishnavi saw him, the world around her seemed to stop.
He was breathtaking. His eyes were a deep, magnetic blue—so profound they seemed capable of pulling anyone into their depths. With thick brows, a perfect forehead, a straight nose, and a well-groomed beard, he looked like a Hollywood star, but with an aura that was far more sophisticated.
Seeing her wide-eyed stare, Karl let out a mischievous smile and playfully winked at her. The unexpected gesture sent a bolt of electricity through her. Realizing she was staring at him like a stunned child, she quickly bit her lip in embarrassment. This entire silent exchange happened in mere seconds, unnoticed by anyone else.
Regaining her composure, she extended her hand. "Hello, I’m Vaishnavi."
He took her hand in a firm yet gentle grip. "I am Karl Hilbert. And you look gorgeous, carino (darling)."
She understood 'gorgeous,' but the last word confused her. She turned to Louis for help. Louis only translated half of it, saying, "He says you look beautiful in this dress." Then he turned to Karl with a stern look. "Don't start your charms the moment you arrive, Karl."
As Louis formally introduced him, Vaishnavi was still reeling from the fact that she was standing in front of the director of a world-famous footwear brand. Karl flashed a charming smile and asked, "So, what do you do for work?"
She explained her job in advertising, and he listened as if hearing it for the first time. In reality, he knew her entire history. Karl’s team handled Louis’s social media, and they had informed him the moment a request for a personal meeting came from India. Intrigued by someone traveling such a distance to meet his grandfather, Karl had ordered a full background check. Within an hour, her profile was on his phone. It was only after his approval that the appointment had been granted.
Robin and Lara spoke to her warmly. Fortunately, unlike many locals, they were fluent in English, which made Vaishnavi feel at ease. They all dined together, surrounded by scientists and scholars. Having a young woman in their circle seemed to energize the older group.
Though she couldn't understand the German jokes, she laughed along when Louis leaned in to whisper the translations. Her laughter was bright and melodic. Hearing it, Karl turned to look at her. Seeing her face light up, her teeth gleaming as she laughed with such abandon, hit him harder than her photos ever did. Unconsciously, he began walking toward her.
Louis caught his grandson’s arm, leaning on his walking stick. "What are you planning, Karl?" he asked in a low, knowing voice.
"Nothing, Grandpa," Karl replied instantly.
Louis pointed two fingers at his own eyes and then at Karl—the universal sign for 'I'm watching you.' Karl laughed at the gesture, ran a hand through his hair, and bowed playfully as if surrendering. "I like her, Opa (Grandpa)," he confessed.
"Like your other girlfriends?" Louis asked sarcastically.
"No," Karl replied seriously. "I don't know what this is, but I like the feeling of her presence."
Louis studied his grandson’s face. "Look, Karl, she is innocent. Her mind is already cluttered with enough confusion; don't go adding more trouble to her life," he warned.
Karl looked at his grandfather in surprise. He had never seen Louis this protective or concerned for a stranger. She has charmed him just as she has charmed me, Karl thought. "Fairy girl," he muttered. "Okay, Opa, I won't disturb her. Trust me."
Louis still looked skeptical. Karl was a playboy, a man who took nothing seriously and lived a life of leisure and entertainment. His world was filled with friends and girlfriends who greeted him with hugs and kisses—standard in their culture, but perhaps too overwhelming for someone like 'Vaishu.' Louis didn't want her to be misled.
Little did Louis know that the Universe had already laid its plans to intertwine their destinies.
As the party ended, Louis signaled James to drive Vaishnavi back safely. "I’ll pick you up tomorrow morning," Louis told her. "We’re going somewhere special."
"Where?" Vaishnavi asked, her eyes sparking.
"No, no questions. It’s a surprise," Louis smiled. Vaishnavi pouted playfully, and Louis patted her head affectionately. "Good night, child."
As her car drove away, Karl watched from his balcony and made a quick phone call. A man on a motorcycle followed her car at a distance, calling Karl once she was safely inside her room. "She is safe, Boss," he reported before riding away.
