Doc wouldn’t have felt so confident if he could have eavesdropped on his mother and
sister six hours later at Les Deuxelles, a restaurant in New Orleans.
The waiter put menus before the two ladies and waited. Linda, the younger of the
two, tall and willowy, wore her dark hair short. Elspeth, her mother, was still a
handsome woman, but matronly and gray. Her square jaw, softened by a ready smile,
suggested a woman of determination. She absently fingered her pearl necklace as the
waiter hovered over them.
