The First Look- Part 3

470 Words
The distance between Sarah and Samuel didn’t go away. Days passed, and things only became more awkward. Their conversations were shorter, and the laughter they once shared started to disappear. Sarah tried to act normal, but every time she saw Samuel talking to that same girl, her heart sank. One afternoon, she couldn’t take it anymore. As soon as class ended, she quickly packed her bag and rushed out, trying to avoid him. But Samuel noticed. “Sarah, wait!” he called out, hurrying after her. She stopped but didn’t turn around. Her heart was beating fast again—but this time, it wasn’t from excitement. “What’s wrong?” Samuel asked, slightly out of breath. “You’ve been acting different.” “I’m not,” Sarah replied quietly. Samuel frowned. “You are. Did I do something?” There was a long silence. Finally, Sarah turned to face him, her eyes slightly watery. “You didn’t do anything,” she said. “It’s just… I see you with her all the time, and—” She stopped herself. “And what?” Samuel asked gently. Sarah looked down, her voice barely above a whisper. “It makes me feel like I don’t matter.” Samuel’s expression changed immediately. “Wait… you mean Kayla? She’s my cousin. She just transferred here last week.” Sarah froze. “Your… cousin?” she repeated, feeling her cheeks heat up with embarrassment. Samuel nodded. “Yeah. Why didn’t you just ask me?” Sarah didn’t know what to say. She felt relieved, but also a little silly for assuming the worst. “I thought…” she started, then stopped. “Never mind.” Samuel stepped closer. “No, tell me.” Sarah took a deep breath, her heart pounding again—but this time, she didn’t run from it. “I thought you liked her,” she admitted softly. “And I didn’t know why that bothered me so much… until now.” Samuel looked at her, his eyes soft. “And now?” Sarah hesitated for a moment, then finally said it. “Because I like you.” The words hung in the air, and for a second, everything felt still. Samuel smiled. “I was hoping you’d say that,” he said quietly. Sarah looked up, surprised. “What?” “I like you too,” he admitted. “I just didn’t know if you felt the same.” Sarah felt her heart racing again—but this time, it wasn’t confusion or jealousy. It was happiness. From that day on, things between them became even stronger. No more misunderstandings, no more hiding feelings. Just two people who started with a simple glance… and found something real. And every time their eyes met after that— Sarah didn’t look away anymore.
