2: Party Planning

1059 Words
It has been one week since Katrina's eighteenth Birthday and she felt like she was flying high. The pack felt like her home was a punishment, and to them it was. For her though it was the first safe place she's had since she was a small child. No one was there to call her names or criticize her; no one pushing her down or taking their bad day out on her. Packs were like families, and she knew this, but she had never been included. Katrina hated it, it wasn't her fault she had stumbled on pack lands, or that she was abandoned. 'Although maybe it was, maybe they knew I was worthless too.' She thought, before trying to push the thought away. It was bad enough that everyone else blamed her for everything, no point in doing it to herself. She tried to keep a positive outlook on life, and living away from the main body of the pack, that became much easier. She even felt comfortable enough to start a small garden on the side of her shack. It was like meditating after a long day at work, working on something that was just for her. After doing the math she figured she could escape here in about six months. She was hoping to be able to take what plants she managed to harvest with her, if she could save even more money then she'll have an even better chance. She wouldn't have a lot, but if she spent less than $50 a month on food, she should be able to leave here with at least 3,000 dollars in six months. She hoped that would be enough to get her by while she found a job. She had managed to look up general hotel prices once when she was at the library. So she was pretty certain she could stay at one of them for at least a month. If she hadn't found a job by then Katrina didn't know what she'd do. Shaking her head she tried to shake the thoughts away. The only way to know if she'll survive is to do it; and whatever lay out there has to be better than here. She held onto this notion so tightly that nothing else mattered. She finally made her way up to the pack house, it was her turn to make them breakfast today. Something she was good at, but hated. She would hear compliments coming from the dining room sometimes, just to hear "the human made it". As if that made it bad. It was fine though, just keep refilling the buffet and then she can get to work on helping set up for the party this weekend. Katrina wasn't allowed to attend, of course, but she was just happy to do something different. And it was way better than scrubbing toilets. **************************** Katrina had just finished the last serving as the Buffet closed. Whatever was out there is whatever's left. She wasn't allowed to have any, but sometimes she would sneak a waffle or French toast. Today was one of those days, snagging a single waffle from the tray before she took it out and placing it on the counter. However when she walked back in she saw Young Alpha Nate looking at it. She stopped in the door frame, bowing to him and wishing she could kick him instead. Alpha Daniel may not be kind, but he wasn't cruel. His son however was a monster who found whatever reason for me to be punished. "It seems you forgot one," he said finally picking up the waffle. "It appears so, Young Alpha, maybe it slid off when I picked it up." She knew he was going to hit her, but she didn't bother blocking it. That would just make it worse. His slap turned her heard and caused her eye to swell almost immediately. She let out a small gasp but did not otherwise show her pain. He leaned in close enough to kiss before he yelled in my face. "Then do it better next time, you'd think by now you'd know how to carry a platter." "Yes, Young Alpha." Katrina whispered, hoping he would let her off with just the slap. He regarded her coldly for a minute before grabbing her arm and dragging her out the back door. Young Alpha Nate tossed her onto the ground from the porch, calling out "Your job inside here is finished. Get to work." She nodded and picked herself up from the ground, grateful he let her off easy. Then hating herself for being grateful. He just tossed her off the porch like she was trash. Still she knew better than to say anything, she would keep her head down and escape when she could. The head omega walked over to Katrina, handing her the list of what she needed to complete today. They didn't speak a word to each other, just moved along with their jobs. Katrina had attempted to talk with her once, but all she had managed to do was get herself punished. The women even refused to give Katrina her name, as if hearing it from her mouth would tarnish it in some way. Katrina began her job of decorating the stage for the Alpha ceremony, where Young Alpha Nate would begin the first processes of taking over the pack. He wouldn't have full control until he was 25 and it was blessed by the King or his son. Werewolves threw parties all the time with allied packs, due to wolf's having destined mates blessed to them through the moon goddess. Unfortunately mates are not always found in your own pack, so constant get togethers. Katrina had been told they can't even find each other until they turned eighteen. She of course, would not have a mate, because she was human and their rules didn't apply to her. She didn't even believe in their moon Goddess; although she'd never say that aloud. They may just kill her for such a comment. Still, this was relaxing in a way. She was outside, the breeze felt nice on this warm summer day. She had no jobs requiring her to do anything other than this and breakfast. As long as no one else messed with her today would be a nice one.
