Chapter Ten: Did He Really Leave?
“Of course. As long as the young master permits… However, you may not leave Chu Manor. From now on, I will be your personal bodyguard. Whenever you leave this room—except when you’re with the young master—I will follow you everywhere to protect you,” Dong Shuang replied expressionlessly.
“Oh, thank you.”
“If you want to express gratitude, you should thank my young master instead.”
“Then, please convey my thanks to your young master for his thoughtfulness,” Mu Xueran said with a self-deprecating smile. Personal bodyguard—it sounded noble, but in reality, she was nothing more than a prisoner under constant surveillance.
“I will relay your thanks. Miss Mu, you would be wise to behave yourself here. If you anger the young master, the consequences could be severe,” Dong Shuang said with a cryptic smile before leaving the room.
What did she mean? Was it a genuine warning out of goodwill, or did she know about the mysterious caller? Mu Xueran couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off about this place.
...
In the clear waters of the lotus pond, koi fish swam happily among the leaves.
They were so free, so carefree. Mu Xueran lightly touched a lotus leaf, lost in thought, murmuring to herself, “If only I could be one of these fish.”
“Miss Mu, are you finding it difficult to stay at Chu Manor? Do you realize how many women would give anything to spend even one more day with the young master?” Dong Shuang, standing rigidly beside her, said coldly.
“Everyone has their own desires, don’t they? I’m not like those women. I wish I had never met Chu Lingfeng. Dong Shuang, do you know why he’s holding my mother and doing this to me?” Mu Xueran’s sudden outburst startled a group of koi into scattering.
“I’m sorry, Miss Mu, I don’t have the authority to answer your questions.”
“Then tell me where my mother is. Can I see her?”
“I can’t answer your question. I can only tell you that your mother is safe for now. However… if you anger the young master, I can’t guarantee that will remain the case,” Dong Shuang said with her usual cold expression.
Hearing even this tiny bit of information about her mother made Mu Xueran’s heart tighten. “What? What does Chu Lingfeng want—”
“Miss Mu, if you continue asking, I’ll call the young master to inform him of your lack of cooperation,” Dong Shuang interrupted, her gaze fixed on the pond.
Her face always seemed covered with a layer of frost. What was she really thinking? Mu Xueran glanced at Dong Shuang’s profile and instinctively looked up at the window opposite her bedroom. She froze.
The spot where the camera had been yesterday now held a man with a pair of binoculars, watching her direction.
She stared in shock as the figure lowered the binoculars and quickly drew the curtains.
The distance was too great to make out his face clearly. All she could see was his slim frame and pale complexion under a black suit.
If it was Chu Lingfeng, why was he spying on her?
If it wasn’t him, then who was this person? Was he someone Chu Lingfeng had arranged to monitor her? Could this person be connected to the mysterious caller?
Mu Xueran was utterly confused.
“Miss Mu, what’s wrong? What are you looking at?” Dong Shuang asked, her eyes following Mu Xueran’s gaze toward the window.
“Oh, nothing. Did your young master really leave?” Mu Xueran asked cautiously.
