Chapter Nine: The Watching Eyes Who was secretly filming her? And why? Was it Chu Lingfeng? But Dong Shuang said he was away. Yet, that tall figure bore an uncanny resemblance to him. Could someone else be living in this villa? Mu Xueran stared at the camera in confusion, feeling as though a pair of eyes were constantly watching her from the shadows. Just then, her rarely-used phone rang unexpectedly, startling her. It was a song she hadn’t heard in ages. Her phone bill had been overdue for days. Who could have paid it off? The number was unfamiliar. “Hello…” Mu Xueran hesitated before answering. “Miss Mu Xueran, do you want to escape Chu Lingfeng’s torment?” The voice was hoarse, clearly altered, making it impossible to determine the speaker's age or identity. “Who are you? How do you know about my situation?” “You don’t need to know who I am. If you want to escape, do as I say.” Escape? No… Her mother was still in Chu Lingfeng’s hands. If she fled, he would never spare her mother. She had willingly come here to rescue her. No, even if she could escape, she couldn’t abandon her mother. “Miss Mu, do you think staying here will make Chu Lingfeng release your mother? Rest assured, I’ll find a way to save her. Think it over. If you want to escape his torment, three days from now, at 10 p.m., make your way to the north gate of Chu Manor. Remember, don’t let anyone follow you.” The mysterious caller seemed to read her mind, making Mu Xueran shiver. “Who are you? Why do you know so much about me and my mother? Why are you helping me? Hello? Hello?” But all she heard was the “beep… beep…” of a disconnected line. Frustrated, she redialed the number. “The number you have dialed is no longer in service. Please check and dial again.” The call had just gone through moments ago. Now it was an invalid number. Mu Xueran set the phone down with a heavy heart, frowning as she stared out the window. This mysterious person clearly knew everything about her, even details like how Chu Lingfeng had tormented her—things no outsider could possibly know. It was as if an invisible specter was lurking nearby, watching her every move with a malicious grin. The camera across the window stood silently. Was the caller the same person who had been filming her? Just then, a knock at the door startled Mu Xueran out of her thoughts. “Who is it?” she called out warily. “It’s me,” Dong Shuang said as she entered, dressed in a crisp black suit, her expression as cold as ever. “What is it?” “Miss Mu, you seem tense. Did something happen?” Dong Shuang asked coolly. “Oh, nothing. It’s just so quiet here. I was surprised to hear a sound,” Mu Xueran replied, stepping away from the window and moving toward the luxurious sofa. She wasn’t sure why, but she didn’t want Dong Shuang to know about the mysterious call. “This is the key to your room,” Dong Shuang said, casually glancing out the window before placing a key on the jade coffee table in front of the sofa. “A key? Are you saying I can freely come and go from this room now?” Mu Xueran looked at the key in surprise.
