Chapter Nine: Breakup and Rebirth

915 Words
The morning mist shrouded the Lu family mansion, its chill seeping into the air. Gu Yunshen stood quietly by the window, holding a cup of tea that had long gone cold. Her gaze fell on the perfectly manicured garden outside. The neat hedges and blooming flowers seemed flawless, yet they felt like the walls of a gilded cage, suffocating her. The argument from the previous night still echoed in her mind. Lu Zexing’s indifference, the pressure from the family, and her endless compromises had worn her down. The Breaking Point “What do you want, Gu Yunshen?” Lu Zexing’s voice was filled with frustration, his cold tone laced with accusation. “What do I want?” She lifted her head, her eyes unwavering. “I want respect, independence, and a space to breathe in this family. I don’t want to be a puppet without a soul!” “You married into the Lu family; you should’ve known this is your responsibility!” he retorted, slamming his hand on the table. “Responsibility?” Gu Yunshen let out a bitter laugh. “And what about my dreams? My feelings? To you, I’ve only ever been a piece of your family’s chessboard, never someone you truly cared to protect.” Lu Zexing fell silent. He had always used duty to mask his emotions, but he realized now that his coldness was pushing her further and further away. “Yunshen, I—” he began, but she cut him off. “Don’t say another word.” Her voice was calm but resolute. “Lu Zexing, I’m tired. I won’t continue living like this.” The Courage to Leave That night, Gu Yunshen packed her bags, taking only a few simple belongings and the books she cherished most. Without notifying anyone in the family or saying goodbye to Lu Zexing, she quietly left the place that had suffocated her for so long. As the car drove away from the Lu family estate, she glanced back at the mansion, its grandeur fading into the morning mist. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, feeling a sense of freedom she hadn’t felt in years. She returned to the small apartment her parents had left her. It wasn’t large, but it gave her a sense of peace. She began to rebuild her life, focusing on the dreams she had once abandoned for marriage and family obligations. Painful Realizations Lu Zexing stood in the empty room that once belonged to Gu Yunshen, his gaze lingering on the small remnants of her presence. Books left on the table, jewelry she didn’t take with her, and the now-empty half of the wardrobe—each item reminded him of her absence. A few days later, his secretary handed him a document. “Miss Gu has sent the divorce papers,” the secretary said cautiously. He took the papers, his hands trembling slightly. At that moment, he realized that her departure wasn’t a fleeting anger but a carefully made decision born of exhaustion. “Gu Yunshen…” he murmured her name, his expression desolate. Memories of their time together flooded his mind, and he finally understood that his feelings for her had gone beyond duty. Her resilience, intelligence, and quiet strength had captivated him, and he had fallen in love with her. Yet, he had never expressed it—worse, he had driven her away. A New Beginning Determined not to let regret consume him, Lu Zexing resolved to change. He stepped back from several family projects and began dedicating himself to philanthropic work, hoping to atone for the mistakes of his past. Months later, Gu Yunshen was busy organizing books in her newly opened bookstore. It was a small, cozy space filled with books she loved, a dream she had finally brought to life. “Do you have this book in stock?” a familiar voice asked behind her. She turned around and saw Lu Zexing standing there, holding one of her favorite literary classics. His expression was softer than she remembered, and his eyes were fixed on her. “What are you doing here?” she asked, her tone a mix of surprise and guardedness. “I came to find you,” he replied simply. “And to make amends.” “I’ve moved on. I don’t want to go back to the past,” she said firmly, shaking her head. “I know,” Lu Zexing said softly. “This time, I’m not here to force you. I only hope for a chance to start over. Whether as a friend, or…” He hesitated. “Just another customer.” His sincerity caught her off guard. For the first time, she saw not the cold, calculating man she had married, but someone who had changed, someone trying to reconnect. The Dawn of Rebirth Gu Yunshen didn’t give him an answer right away, but neither did she refuse. She began to see that the man standing before her had indeed transformed. Whether his change was permanent, only time could tell. And she, too, had emerged stronger and more confident from the ashes of their broken marriage. Sunlight streamed into the bookstore, bathing it in a warm glow. Closing the book in her hands, Gu Yunshen allowed a faint smile to cross her lips. No matter what lay ahead, she knew she had the courage to face it. For Gu Yunshen and Lu Zexing, their story wasn’t over yet—it was just beginning.
