Chapter 2
Zoeys point of view
“yeah, maya told me you had a meeting with a client,”
“uhm… Ooh, it was Mr. John, my old friend that visited. She must have mistook him for a client,’ he said.
What Maya told me was different from what Joe told me. could it be Maya was with him in the private room earlier?
I looked into Joe's blue eyes. “speak to me Joe. Is there anything going on that I need to know?” I asked feigning curiosity despite already knowing the answer. He would definitely not say a thing.
“No, what did you mean?” he asked.
“I just thought maybe you will have something to say you know today is a happy hearts day,” I gave him the chance to come clean, to choose honesty over deception, but ‘No’ he didn't. His lie only added to the chaos already swirling in my mind.
He pulled me to a warm embrace. “You know you are my everything and you are the only person I have in my life. If there is anything you need to know I promise I won't hesitate to let you know OK?” he assured.
I nodded repeatedly as his cold words sent shivers down my spine. Somehow I could still feel Joe loved me. He needed me but it felt like he was being controlled by someone.
Someone wanted to take him away from me and I would let that happen. Not when I was still alive. I tried to silence my doubts, telling myself I was just paranoid about his fidelity.
I stayed a little longer, cherishing the moment with him. He was sweet, caring and attentive–his usual self. There was nothing outwardly suspicious, and yet, the unease inside me wouldn't fade.
Just then a knock interrupted everything. “Come in,” Joe shouted.
Maya again! She came in with a file in her hand, her face lit up with joy as though she was meeting the queen of England.
“Sir, here are some documents that demand your signature as soon as possible,” she said, her voice soft and soothing as always.
“Sure,” Joe stretched and collected the files, he signed them and handed them over to her. He plastered an expensive smile on his face, a smile filled with love and desire.
“thank you,” she returned a simple smile before turning to leave. She walked majestically, swinging her hips as though she was the CEO of the company. I rolled my eyes in frustration before standing up.
“I'll be going, take care,” I said as I headed out without even waiting for his response.
“hey.. Babe..,” I slammed the door hard as I walked out of the building. My eyes filled with moisture. All I wanted was to get out of there as soon as possible.
My hands were shivering on the steering wheel as I drove home. Arriving home I dug my phone from my pocket and dialed Dorathy's number.
Dorathy was my cousin and my best friend. We grew up together and she was my everything. Her problem was mine and mine was hers.
It rang and there was no response. I left a text demanding to see her at home immediately she got across with the message. I flung my phone and threw myself on the bed.
The weight of the hospital stress and Maya pressed down on me.
I forced myself up, took my bath and got Dressed.
I worked down the stairs, the tension in the air was too thick to cut with a knife. The only sound heard was that of my footsteps slapped against the marble.
I walked to the kitchen and grabbed a cup of coffee.
Just as I sat on the couch in the living room, Dorathy entered.
“Hey sister, sorry I missed your call. What's up, why do you needed me so urgent,”
At that moment it felt like I found an ally.
“Hmm, come and have a seat first,” I gestured to her to come and sit next to me.
I handed my cup of coffee to her before clearing my throat.
Dorathy has already been a good adviser, any time I tell her about my problem she always finds a solution to it.
“I think Joe is cheating on me, Dorathy,” I said as the words tasted bitter in my mouth.
Dorathys eyes popped out, she eyed me with confusion as If I had just grown three heads.
“What did you just say? Joe? No that's not possible,” she said, shaking her head in disbelief.
“I'm serious, Dorathy. And it seemed with his secretary,” I said. “They see each other everyday–perfect cover for meeting up, creating alibis.” I added.
Dorathy shifted uncomfortably, her eyes fixed on the center table, buried in thought. There was silence between us for a while before Dorathy finally broke the silence.
“I'm highly disappointed in Joe. I.. I'm speechless now,” she said, placing a hand on my lap and squeezing it gently, trying to console me.
“I am tired, Dorathy, I want to end everything. I want to face both of them when I next visit the office. I can't let someone take Joe from me. I have sacrificed alot for our love,”
“Do you have any evidence?”
“No I don't. I just…”
“don't confront them, it might be possible that he wasn't actually cheating on you. But once you have solid evidence you can take any action you wish to, OK,” dorathy explained.
“you are right dorathy, thank you so much,” I opened my arms demanding for a hug.
My eyes wandered to the clock. It's already IPM.
“Joe will be back any moment from now, he told me he would take me out for lunch. You know today is a special day for every couple,” I chuckled.
Before she could reply, her phone rang. She glanced at the screen but declined the call.
She gave me a goodbye hug before standing up. “I need to go back to the office now, my boss sent me and it's already 3 hours now, I didn't get back to him,” she said before storming out.
“won't you wait and say hello to Joe, he will be back any moment from…”
Before I could complete my statement, Dorathy slammed the door.
Dorathy might actually be right. I just often see Maya in his office. I have no evidence that he was truly cheating on me. What if he just took her as a friend and that's it?
A thought suddenly popped up in my head. I know what to do. I know how to find out if Joe was truly cheating on me or not.
