Chapter 3 Zoey's point of view Joe came back home fresh up and took me out for a lunch date. He took me to the most expensive restaurant, our best restaurant. When we entered the restaurant, the luxurious furniture, the soft music in the background was just perfect for a date and it reminded me of old days when we were newly wedded couples. The place held so many happy memories. It has been ages since we visited. The last time we came here the furniture wasn't that luxurious. It had been a while since I had a date with Joe mainly because of our work. We all used to be very busy. I chose to sit opposite of Joe to explore his beauty. He was a very handsome man, his brown hair falling just perfectly, framing his pointed nose and sharp jawline. He was just…. Perfect and every woman's dream. We ordered our food, had our lunch and headed back home. That day I was beyond the moon with excitement. That was what I needed to forget all the dramas. “Hope you enjoyed our precious time together Mrs Joe,” how inquired, looking at me expectantly. “Mr Joe still doesn't know how to impress a woman,” I murmured. Joe chuckled softly, his gaze melting into mine before he leaned in and kissed me deeply, tenderly. “ouch! You are trying to sabotage my effort,” he murmured, his lips brushing against mine. Joe stood up and went out to his car. After a few minutes, he returned to the living room with a bouquet in his hand. He knelt with one knee and handed over the bouquet to me, his eyes twinkling. I inhaled deeply, savouring the scent of lavender, my favorite. “thank you so much love,” I whispered, feeling butterflies all over my belly. The air between us was light and hopeful. Joe sat on the couch and I laid on his lap. We spent hours talking about old times. The love I shared with Joe was so strong I shouldn't even be suspecting him. He knew me more than I knew myself and I knew him more than he knew himself. We had been dating for over a decade now, since when we were in highschool. I never thought I could convince my father to hand over his company to Joe, although mum was against it. Thanks to dad for handing over to Joe before they both died. It had been 3 years since my parents died and Joe had been my parents and husband at the time. I could remember the day Joe promised my parents he would love and protect me with all his life. And ever since, Joe had been there for me. It was already getting dark and I had to prepare for work. “Babe, I don't feel like going to work today. I just want to switch off my phone and be in your arms cuddling till tomorrow,” I said, slightly squeezing my face in annoyance. “Come on Zoey, you have to go. I'm all yours and I'm going no where. Perhaps you don't know how many lives you are going to save tonight,” Joe stated, trying to encourage me. I managed to get myself up. I went to the room, freshened up and got dressed ready for work. When I got downstairs Joe worked me to the car and opened the door for me with his usual grace. I got behind the wheels and drove to the hospital. “Hey, you look super excited today, come on, share the good news,” Megan, my colleague, asked as she saw the happiness that was all over my face. I tried as much as I could to keep my expression as neutral as possible but I find myself smiling every second. “It's nothing Megan, just had a great day,” I said. “Hmm, you and I know that there is something. Better start talking,” she chuckled. “You know what today is, I had a great time with my husband that's all,” I replied and we continued our usual conversation. By 10pm in the night I had already helped 3 mothers bring new life into the world. My chief resident who was also pregnant was rushed to the ward. “ouch! Ahh!” she cried out, her voice flattering as she recognised me “Zoey, save my child even if it would cost me my life,” I nodded repeatedly assuring her everything will be fine as we rushed her into assessment. She wasn't due yet but complications had forced an emergency delivery. Hours passed and we finally delivered the child in good condition. Exhausted, I stepped out to get a glass of water. “Zoey, chief resident wants to see you now,” Megan said. I took some fresh air before returning back. Chief resident stared at me, her eyes softened with gratitude. “Zoey you can go come and rest. This is how I will express my gratitude to you because thanking you doesn't seem enough,” she said. My face lit up with joy as I held her hand, “thank you so much ma'am, and you don't need to thank me. This is what I was paid for,” I said before rushing out. I knew Joe would definitely be shocked to see me home. I quickly headed to the dressing room, changed my clothes and stormed out of the building. I got behind the wheels and drove off, desperate to see myself at home. What a perfect time to surprise my husband on valentines day. The gate opened and I drove inside, my heart skipped a beat when I saw Dorathy's car in our parking lot. “What is Dorathy doing here by this time,” I whispered to myself. I glanced at my wristwatch and it was already past 11PM. I parked my car beside hers. I stepped out and walked to her car to confirm and sure enough it was her car. I could recognise it even when my eyes were closed. I walked into the living room, my heart sank when Dorathy's familiar scent filled my nostrils. I saw two glass cups and a wine on the center table. My heart dropped when a thought popped in my head. I turned and took the stairs, straight to the bedroom.
