Chapter Seventeen Friedrich sat in Thomas Ridgeway’s living room, finishing the explanation. “It difficult to believe that she’s gone,” the sad husband reported his feelings, as if he were watching a parade go by. “I’m sure it’s going to be an adjustment.” “It’s been pretty much of a sham, hasn’t it?” He looked up at his friend. “I mean our marriage. You don’t think she married me just to hide from immigration?” “No. I don’t. She genuinely cares for you. She wouldn’t have arranged all this unless she did. Leaving the country was not what she wanted—but it had to happen. There’s little chance immigration would have been kind to her under the circumstances. Her sole concern was you and your career.” “I would have stood by her.” Thomas said. “And watch your career crumble? For what?”
