CHAPTER 3 Stranger beneath the ruins

1387 Words
The first rule every child of Elaris Vale learned was simple: Never follow a voice that comes from the darkness. The elders had repeated those words for generations. They told stories of lost travelers who followed beautiful voices into forgotten places and returned as strangers. They warned of ancient spirits that could imitate loved ones. They spoke of shadows that knew the deepest desires of the heart and used them as bait. But nobody had ever told Amaris Vaelora what to do when the darkness whispered her own name. Because that was something no one had experienced before. Not until her. The ancient chamber beneath the Elderwood ruins remained silent. Too silent. Amaris stood before the golden flame floating above the stone altar, unable to move. It was impossible. Everything about this moment was impossible. The hidden ruins. The ancient symbols. The flame that seemed alive. The strange memories that did not belong to her. Yet somehow... They felt like they had always been a part of her. Tavian stood several steps behind her, gripping a small dagger he carried for protection. The weapon suddenly felt useless. A piece of ordinary metal against something that felt older than the world itself. "Amaris," he whispered. She did not answer. "Amaris, I think we should leave." Still nothing. He moved closer. "Please tell me you are hearing me." Finally, she turned. Her eyes reflected the golden light. "Tavian..." Her voice sounded distant. "I know this place." He frowned. "You said that already." "No." She looked around the ancient chamber. "I mean I truly know it." Her fingers touched the stone wall. "I know where every symbol is carved. I know where the cracks are. I know there is a hidden passage behind that pillar." Tavian stared at her. "You have never been here." "I know." "Then how do you know?" Amaris had no answer. Because the truth was terrifying. She did not remember learning this place. She remembered belonging to it. The hidden passage opened when Amaris placed her hand against the ancient pillar. Tavian stepped back. "Of course there is a secret passage." Amaris glanced at him. "You sound disappointed." "I am not disappointed." He looked at the darkness beyond the doorway. "I am questioning every decision that brought me here." Despite everything, Amaris smiled. That was Tavian's gift. When the world became frightening, he reminded her she was still human. Together, they entered. The passage was narrow, carved from black stone that seemed to absorb the light from their torches. The walls were covered with paintings. Not words. Not symbols. Memories. Amaris stopped when she saw the first one. A woman standing beneath a burning sky. She wore silver armor. A golden flame surrounded her. Her face was unclear. But Amaris felt a strange connection. "Who is she?" Tavian asked. Amaris stepped closer. "I don't know." But her heart answered differently. The woman looked like her. Not exactly. But enough to make her afraid. They continued deeper. The paintings told a story. A story of a great war. Ancient kingdoms united against an enemy that came from beyond the stars. Armies of humans, elves, dragons, and spirits fighting beneath a sky torn apart by darkness. At the center of it all stood the bearer of the Eternal Flame. The protector of Eternia. The final hope. Then the paintings changed. The warrior was no longer standing with an army. She was alone. The kingdoms had turned against her. Friends became enemies. Those she trusted raised weapons against her. And at the end... She fell. A single image remained. The warrior lying beneath a crimson sky. The Eternal Flame leaving her body. Tavian swallowed. "That doesn't look like a victory." Amaris stared at the painting. "No." Her voice became quiet. "It looks like a sacrifice." They reached the final chamber. Unlike the others, this room was untouched. No dust. No decay. No signs of time. In the center stood a black stone pedestal. Upon it rested a small silver object. A pendant. Amaris approached slowly. The moment she reached for it, a voice filled the chamber. "Do not touch it." The voice was calm. But powerful. Both Amaris and Tavian turned. A figure stood in the doorway. A stranger. A man wearing a dark cloak covered in ancient markings. His face was hidden. But his presence changed the atmosphere instantly. The flame beside Amaris flickered violently. Tavian stepped forward, placing himself between them. "Who are you?" The stranger ignored him. His eyes remained fixed on Amaris. "Where did you find her?" Amaris frowned. "Find who?" The stranger stepped closer. "You know exactly what I mean." "I have never seen you before." "No." His voice lowered. "But I have seen you." A cold feeling moved through Amaris. "When?" The stranger remained silent. Then he looked at the glowing mark on her hand. And for the first time... Fear appeared in his eyes. "You awakened it." Amaris looked at her palm. "The Flame?" The stranger nodded. "Do you understand what you have done?" "I don't know what is happening." "That is the problem." He looked toward the ancient pendant. "The moment the Flame chose you, every enemy who has waited in darkness for thousands of years felt your existence." Tavian tightened his grip on his dagger. "Who are you?" The stranger finally looked at him. "Someone trying to prevent a disaster." "That is not an answer." "No." The stranger agreed. "It is a warning." Suddenly, the chamber shook. A deep sound echoed from beneath the ruins. Not an earthquake. Something else. Something alive. The stranger's expression changed. "They found you." Amaris looked confused. "Who?" The answer came from the darkness. A roar. So powerful that the walls cracked. Tavian stepped backward. "What was that?" The stranger pulled a sword from beneath his cloak. The blade was silver. Ancient. Covered in glowing symbols. "Something that should have remained asleep." The ground exploded. A creature emerged from beneath the stone. It was not a beast. Not completely. Its body was covered in black armor-like scales, its eyes burned with unnatural fire, and dark smoke poured from its mouth. A creature born from corrupted magic. A creature that belonged to the forgotten wars. Amaris froze. She could feel the darkness inside it. Pain. Rage. Loneliness. "This thing is suffering," she whispered. The stranger looked at her sharply. "Do not pity it." "But..." "Amaris." The way he said her name stopped her. "You cannot save everything." The creature attacked. The stranger moved instantly. His sword collided with the beast's claws, creating a wave of energy that shattered nearby stones. Tavian grabbed Amaris. "We need to leave!" But Amaris could not move. Because the creature was looking at her. Not with hatred. With recognition. It lowered its head. Just slightly. As if it remembered her. Then it spoke. Not with its mouth. Inside her mind. "The Flame returns..." Amaris felt a chill. "The daughter of eternity has returned..." The creature screamed. "The end begins again." The golden flame inside Amaris awakened. Not because she commanded it. Because it wanted to protect her. Light exploded from her body. The chamber became brighter than the sun. The creature stumbled backward. The stranger stared. Not at the power. At her. Because he finally understood. The prophecy was not about someone who would carry the Flame. It was about someone who would become one with it. "Impossible," he whispered. Amaris looked at him. "Who are you?" The stranger lowered his sword. For a moment, the darkness covering his face moved. And Amaris saw his eyes. Silver. Ancient. Filled with sorrow. "My name..." He paused. "...is Lucian Aerion Valcrest." Tavian immediately frowned. "The lost prince?" Lucian ignored him. His gaze remained on Amaris. "And you..." His voice became softer. "You are the reason the world is about to burn." Amaris stared at him. "I thought I was supposed to save it." Lucian looked toward the darkness beyond the ruins. "Sometimes..." He whispered. "The person destined to save the world is the same person destined to destroy everything." The words remained hanging in the chamber. A warning. A mystery. A promise. And far away, beyond the borders of Eternia... Malverion Tharos smiled. Because the game had finally begun. The Last Flame had found its guardian. And the darkness had found its enemy.
