CHAPTER 12 The shadow at the gate

893 Words
The armies of darkness waited beneath the Temple of Dawn. For thousands of years, the mountain had stood untouched. Kingdoms had risen and fallen below its peaks, oceans had changed their borders, and generations of mortals had forgotten the legends of the ancient guardians. Yet the Temple remained. A symbol of hope. A place where light had survived when everything else had fallen. Until now. Amaris Vaelora stood upon the balcony overlooking the battlefield, unable to move. The figure leading the Shadow Legion remained distant, but she could feel his presence as clearly as if he stood beside her. There was something familiar about him. Something buried deep within her memories. "Who is he?" she whispered. Seraphiel Dawnbringer's expression was grim. "His name is Lord Veyron Kaelith." The name echoed through the air. Tavian looked between them. "You know him?" The High Keeper did not answer immediately. Because the truth was clearly painful. "I knew the man he used to be." Amaris turned. "What does that mean?" Seraphiel looked toward the battlefield below. "Long ago, before the darkness claimed him, Veyron was one of Eternia's greatest protectors." The wind grew colder. "He was a Guardian of the Eternal Flame." Silence followed. Amaris stared at the army below. "A Guardian?" "Yes." "And now he commands an army trying to destroy us?" Seraphiel's eyes darkened. "Some of the greatest tragedies begin with people who once wanted to save the world." --- The first attack came without warning. A wave of shadow energy crashed against the temple's golden barrier, shaking the entire mountain. The sound was like thunder trapped inside the earth. Thousands of soldiers raised their weapons. The Shadow Legion moved as one. The barrier flickered. Again. Another strike. Cracks appeared across the golden shield. The Guardians inside the temple rushed into position. White-armored warriors filled the walls. Mages carrying crystal staffs stood beside ancient statues. For the first time, Amaris saw the true defenders of the Eternal Flame. They were not legends. They were people. People afraid. People willing to fight anyway. Lucian stood beside her, his silver sword drawn. "You should not be here." Amaris looked at him. "Where should I be?" "Safe." She almost laughed. "Do you honestly believe there is anywhere safe for me now?" Lucian had no answer. Because they both knew the truth. The moment the Eternal Flame awakened, her old life had ended. --- A deep horn sounded across the battlefield. The Shadow Legion stopped. Every soldier lowered their weapon. The rider at the center of the army slowly approached the temple gates. The golden barrier opened just enough for his voice to pass through. "Amaris Vaelora." Hearing her name spoken by him sent a strange pain through her heart. She stepped closer. "How do you know me?" The figure removed his helmet. A man appeared beneath it. He was older than Lucian but younger than Seraphiel. His dark hair was streaked with silver. His face carried the scars of countless battles. But his eyes... His eyes were exactly as she remembered from the vision. The man who had begged for forgiveness. "Because I watched you die." Everyone froze. Amaris felt the Flame burn inside her. "You were there." Veyron's expression changed. For a brief moment, the darkness disappeared. Only sorrow remained. "Yes." Lucian tightened his grip on his sword. "Stay away from her." Veyron looked at him. "You still protect her." His voice carried disappointment. "Even after knowing what she becomes." Amaris frowned. "What I become?" Veyron smiled sadly. "You don't remember." "No." "But you will." A silence followed. Then he looked directly at her. "I was your friend." The words struck her harder than she expected. A thousand questions rushed through her mind. "You betrayed me." Veyron lowered his gaze. "Yes." The honesty shocked her. "You admit it?" "I have carried that sin for thirty years." The battlefield became silent. Even the Shadow Legion waited. "I did what I believed was necessary." Amaris's eyes hardened. "You killed me." Pain crossed his face. "No." His voice broke slightly. "I failed to save you." --- Another explosion shook the mountain. The barrier cracked further. Seraphiel stepped forward. "This conversation ends now." Veyron looked toward him. "Still protecting secrets, old friend?" "You have brought destruction to these walls." "I brought truth." His eyes returned to Amaris. "The Temple has lied to you." Amaris felt her stomach tighten. "What?" "The prophecy." Veyron's voice echoed across the battlefield. "It was never written to save you." The words created a silence heavier than any weapon. Seraphiel's expression changed. "Enough." But Veyron continued. "It was written to control you." The Eternal Flame suddenly reacted. Golden fire erupted around Amaris. Not because she believed him. Not because she trusted him. Because somewhere deep inside... A forgotten part of her recognized the possibility. Veyron placed his helmet back on. "The choice will come soon, Amaris." "Light will ask you to sacrifice yourself again." "Darkness will offer you freedom." He turned his horse away. "And this time..." "You will decide which one deserves your loyalty." The Shadow Legion began retreating. Not defeated. Not victorious. Simply leaving. Amaris watched them disappear into the darkness. Her heart was filled with confusion. Because for the first time... She wondered if the greatest enemy she would face was not the darkness outside the walls. But the truth hidden within herself.
