16 Brian’s death had a devastating effect on me. Quite apart from the fear of capture that plagued me non-stop (no matter how thoroughly a villain covers up his crime, he always worries that eventually he’ll get caught) I was carrying an excessively heavy burden of guilt. Somehow I managed to handle it, although I had to slip into the toilet at frequent intervals for a good cry on my own. These outpourings of emotion made me feel better and gave me the strength to carry on. After one such episode I felt so strong that I toyed with the idea of confronting Sandra about her relationship with Brian. But then, during the drive home, I realised I couldn’t do that because it might arouse her suspicious about how he’d met with his untimely end. The details of his end had not yet come to light,
