27 The following morning I sprang out of bed like a man possessed. There wasn’t a moment to lose. The police would identify Brian at any minute, the news about the identity of the victim would reach Jed, and he would finger me to the authorities. As I hastily washed and dressed, I hatched schemes for doing away with him. It wouldn’t be straightforward; he was nobody’s fool. It would require a convincing excuse to meet with him. And as we were not in the habit of meeting for drinks, administering a sedative could prove tricky. I had no idea how I was going to go about it.
