Chapter 14: Edie Is Disconcerted
It was a long hard winter, not like anything Edie had come across before. The previous winter they had spent travelling from Bombay to Srinagar. Now, wintering in the gompa was another completely different experience.
She was fascinated by the gompa, which is what the llamas, or monks, called the monastery. It was on the edge of the city of Leh and the ground around it was much the same as the rest of the high ground in the area, set on slopes of grey and red scree, without much vegetation, all now covered in snow anyway. It was old. Older than Merton Hall. Probably older than the hall at the Palace of Westminster, which was the oldest place Edie had ever been.
