The road between Srinagar and Leh was quite well travelled. It was one of the arms of the old Silk Road that came down from China through the mountains and on into India. Edie found it amazing that people and goods still travelled these paths that had been first walked hundreds or perhaps thousands of years ago. All along the valley were small settlements. Little clusters of houses where people scraped out a living on the valley floor and sides and who took it as a matter of course that past their doors every so often would come travellers from far, far away who looked and spoke so differently as to be unintelligible.
