Devils Mine

{Chapter One}

I sat on the roof watching as the sun rises bringing another day, the sky filled with yellows and oranges and was quite pretty. I sigh and take another puff of my cigarette, I slowly blow the smoke out

I run my hands through my hair and lay back relaxing.

"There you are Jay" a soft voice spoke. I jump and quickly look at them, I sigh in relief when I see who it is

"Opal...don't scare me like that," I said

"My apologies, but your sister is looking for you," she said

"Right, I'll be in there," I said as I put my cigarette out.

"Were you smoking again? You know how your sister feels about you smoking" she said

"Yeah and she knows that I don't care," I said as I climb back into my room through my window. Opal follows

"Yes she knows, but you should know smoking isn't good—"

"For me? Yes, Opal I totally don't know that" I said sarcastically. She sighs

"I'll be in the kitchen with your sister," she said as she leaves my room. I roll my eyes and go to my bathroom to brush my teeth.

Once I'm done I grab my bag and my phone then leave my room, I walk down the hallway and slide down the rails of the stairs.

"Aren't you a bit too old for that?" my older brother said as he puts me in a headlock.

"Matt let go you asshole," I said as I struggle to get out

"Oh watch your potty mouth little sis," he said as he lets go

"Stop calling little I'm f*****g eighteen now, meaning I'm an adult," I said

"You mean a young adult, I don't know why eighteen and nineteen-year-olds get that mixed up," he said. I roll my eyes and walk to the kitchen.

I walk into the kitchen to see my older sister at the stove cooking.

"Hey sis, Happy Birthday," she said giving me smile

"Thanks," I mumble as I sit at the table with Opal

"Aw come on, have a little more energy than that," she said as she sits a plate of cinnamon toast and bacon in front of me

"I also made your favorite," she said

"Yeah Malina is right, it's your birthday and you might get your angel this time...or demon, but let's pray it's an angel," Matt said as he sits beside me. I roll my eyes and scoff.

Ah yes angels and demons, the thing that everybody has in the world. When you turn a certain age is when you get your angel or demon.

The people who are pure at heart or good enough get an angel, other people who have awful hearts and have done nothing but bad get assigned a demon. Opal is an angel, Matt and Malina are twins so they both got her when they were 13.

But for some reason, I haven't gotten assigned an angel or demon and everyone in the family including mom and dad are praying I get one this year, they're all hoping it's an angel and not a demon, from what I've been told no one in our family has ever had a demon...which is something I don't believe.

"Yeah ok, you guys got yours at 13, mom got hers when she was 5, and dad got his when he was 10...and I'm 18 and I still don't have one, plus I doubt I'd even get an angel with the way I act, "I said

"Hey don't be so negative Jay, I'm sure you'll get an angel and I'm sure you'll get one on this birthday," Opal said.

"It's fine you don't have to lie to me, and besides I don't think I need one so why to have one," I said

"Jay everybody needs one, there's not a person that walks on this earth without one," Matt said. I ignore him and start to eat.

It gets quiet until Malina speaks up

"Um mom and dad said they should be home for your birthday," Malina said

"Mhm," I said not believing her nonsense.

Mom and Dad always miss my birthdays but never miss Matt and Malian's, but that's because my birthday is in the fall and theirs is in the summer. Mom and Dad always have business trips in the fall, meaning they always miss my birthday but I'm used to it by now

"No really, they are coming," Matt said

"I'll believe your bullshit when I see it," I said as I grab my bag and phone

"I'm going to school," I said as I leave the kitchen. I walk to the front door and grab my keys

"Wait Jayden" Matt yells as he runs up to me. I look at him

"What Matt? If you're here to tell me more about how you think I'll get my angel or demon or how mom and dad will show up, then I don't wanna hear it" I said

"No none of that, just this," he said as he holds out a small wrapped box.

"Happy birthday," he said

"Oh, um thanks," I said as I take the present

"Open it before you leave," he said. I roll my eyes and start to unwrap the box, once it's unwrapped I open it to reveal a small Dva from Overwatch keychain. I smile

"Aww," I said as I take the keychain out of the box. I immediately hook it on to my keys

"Thank you," I said

"No problem, oh and Jay," he said

"Yeah?" I said

"Have some faith ok?" He said

"I'll try," I said as I walk out of the house. I walk to my car and unlock the door, I get in and start the car up, as soon as I do I get a text. I open the message and see it's from my bestie Kate

Kate: HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Me: aww thanks

Kate: Feel like picking me and Cade up?

Me: Hmm depends

Kate: on?

Me: if your mom made her chocolate fudge brownies

Kate: she did and I'll give you some if you pick us up

Me: alright I'll be there

Kate: yay see you soon

I laugh and pull out the driveway, I then start to drive to Kate's house.

Once I'm there I park in front of her house and text her I'm outside. As soon as I do I see her and Cade walk out the door.

I smile as they approached my car, Kate opens the passenger door and gets in while Cade gets in the backseat.

"Hey birthday girl," Kate said as she hugs me. I smile

"Please, it's not that big of a deal," I said

"It is because maybe this year you'll get your—" I cut her off

"Please don't say angel or demon because I already had to hear it from Malina, Matt, and Opal," I said. I then turn around to look at Cade

"Hey Cade," I said

"Hey Jay, happy birthday," he said

"Thanks, "I said.

"How does it feel to be getting one step closer to old age" he smirks.

"f**k off," I said. He laughs, I smile

Cade is Kate's angel, she got him when she turned 16, I remember because I was so jealous because she got her angel before me, to be honest, I was even surprised she got an angel, her family was too. Kate isn't the most responsible person, but she is kind...sometimes, so I can see why she got an angel...I think

Cade is kinda like Opal but more on the joking side, he's sweet and knows how to put a smile on your face. He would make a good boyfriend if angels and demons were allowed to date humans or the person they're assigned to.

"Hey Jay if you want maybe I can speak to the man upstairs for ya, I'm sure I can get him to give you an angel" Cade suggests

"Isn't that against the rules?" I asked as I raise an eyebrow

"Yes it is, and I've told him that," Kate said as she gives him a look

"What? I was just joking" he said

"Sure you were," she said. I laugh

"Oh Cade, aren't you gonna give Jay her birthday present?" Kate asked smirking at Cade.

"You got me a gift?" I asked as I look at him. Cade starts to blush

"N-No" he stutters

"Yes you did, don't you remember? We went to the mall and you shopped for hours trying to find the perfect gift for—"Cade cuts Kate off

"Oh right, that gift!" Cade shouts as he pulls out a small box and hands it to me.

"Cade you didn't have to," I said

"Y-Yeah I know, but I wanted to," he said as he looks away.

I smile and open the box, inside the box was a silver necklace; it a silver heart with angel wings on the side. My smile widens

"I love it," I said as I put it around my neck.

"You do?" He asked

"Yeah," I said. He smiles

"Now where's my gift from you?" I asked looking at Kate. She raises an eyebrow

"My gift to you is my mom's brownies," she said as she hands me a small white container

"Technically this gift is from your mom because she made them," I said

"Well then me and Cade are sharing a gift," she said

"Uhm, we are?" Cade asked confused

"Yeah we are," she said. I roll my eyes

"Let's get to school before we're late," I said as I drive off.

"Can you put on some music?" Kate asked

"The AUX cord is right there, do it yourself" I smile.

She sticks her tongue out at me and picks up the cord. She hooks her phone up and strolls through her playlist of never-ending songs.

"Pick a number one through four," she asked

"Two" Cade said

"Three," I said

"Birthday girl vote wins," she said clicking on the song.

We make it to school and I park in my assigned parking spot which was 66.

I shut off the car and get out the car, Kate and Cade get out as well and I lock my car.

"Hey did you study for the Physics test?" I asked

"I'm sorry physics what?" Kate asked as we walk inside the school.

"You know the physics test Mr. Greenmore talked about," I said

"f**k" Kate whines

"You forgot about it didn't you?" I asked

"Yes," she pouts. I sigh

"Cade you should've reminded her," I said

"Hey I'm her angel, not her personal reminder," Cade said

"That is true," I said

"Don't side with him Jay" Kate whines. I laugh

We head to our first period which was Physics, of course, me, Kate, and Cade take our seats at one of the long tables in the back.

"I'm gonna fail this test" Kate groans as she lays her head on the table. I pat her head

"Aww don't say that, I'm sure you'll at least get a D-" I state.

"How is that suppose to make me feel better!" She shouts. Me and Cade laugh.

Mr. Greenmore walks into the class his hands holding papers and his bag, his angel Mr. B right behind him

"Ok class put everything away and we're gonna jump straight into the test," he said as he sits his stuff on his desk. I hear Kate groan, I feel pity for her and raise my hand.

Mr. Greenmore attention snaps towards me

"Yes, Ms. Silver?"

"Sir, do you think we could study for at least 5 minutes?" I asked

"Ms. Silver I've been talking about this test all of last week, you should've had more than enough time to study," he said

"Oh no no sir, you got it wrong, I studied but I overheard some students you have in your class saying they didn't, and I wouldn't want anyone to fail," I say innocently.

To be honest I didn't study either so Kate isn't the only one who needs 5 minutes

"Since when do you care for others?" Mr. B asked. I give him a forced smile

"I've always cared" I lie.

I never liked Mr. B, he's a good assistant teacher but bad when it comes to having sympathy for others. Honestly don't see how this man got into heaven.

Mr. Greenmore sighs

"Alright fine, everyone gets 5 minutes to study before the test, but only 5 minutes so you better use that time wisely," he said.

I could hear a few people sigh in relief and whisper yell "yes!"

"You're the best, you know that," Kate said quickly taking out her notes

"I know" I smile.

I leaned against my car waiting for Kate and Cade to come out. School was over and I was happy, sitting through those boring classes almost and did put me to sleep.

I stare at my phone spamming Kate to hurry up, I then switch over to Cade's contact and start texting him.

Me: where the hell are you guys?

Cade: Um well

Cade: Kate got caught up with Samantha again so they are making out in the bathroom.

Me: again? Ugh, why don't they just date!

Cade: you know how Kate is, she is scared of commitment

Me: True, what are you doing then?

Cade: me and Faith are waiting for them to finish their make-out session

Me: tell Faith I said hi

Cade: she said hi, but they should be done soon then we'll be out

Me: whatever

I turn my phone off and shove it in my back pocket, I sigh and pull out my box of cigarettes; lighting one I put it to my mouth and take a deep puff, I let the smoke leave through my nose.

"You know smoking is bad for you"

I turn my head to see the playboy of the school standing there with a sly smirk.

"Did I ask Josh?" I said blandly

"Ouch, mean as ever," he said. I roll my eyes annoyed with the blonde

"What do you want?" I asked already knowing

"I think you already know" he smirks. I sigh aloud

"No Josh, I will not go out with you," I said

"Oh come on, why not?" He asked

"Because"

"Because what?"

"I. Don't. Like. You" I smile

"Really? You know what give me at least 5 reasons why you won't" he said

"Fine, but only because I'm in the mood to hurt your feelings...you're a playboy, you're a jerk and asshole, you've slept with the entire school, you never even asked me on a date you just asked me out, and you have a demon," I say.

Josh stands there speechless.

"Now if that's all please leave me alone," I said

"First of all girls love me because I have a demon, second of all if you wanna do on a date first then fine, and lastly I haven't slept with then entire school...only half the entire school" he explains

"First of all girls like your demon not you plenty have gone behind your back to sleep with him even though that's against the rules, second of all even if you did ask me out on a date I'd still say no because you're not a good person to date, and lastly please get the f**k out of my face" I mock

Josh jaw clenches as his eyes go dark, he opens his mouth to say something but is interrupted.

"Hey Jayden," Kris says as he places a hand on Josh's shoulder

"Hello Kris" I fake smile

"I hope Josh wasn't bothering you too much" he smirks

"Nothing I can't handle, also where were you? You are his demon so you should be looking after him" I said. Kris shrugs

"Got held up with something," he said. I roll my eyes

"Hey Jay sorry we're late," Kate said walking up to us. Cade followed right behind her

Kate notices Josh and Kris, she immediately sends them a glare

"Why are they here?" She asked coldly

"Relax, they were just leaving," I said

"Yeah, what she said," Josh said

"Well then leave," Cade said

"Don't gotta be rude, Cade" Kris said

The tension was thick and unbearable.

"Alright! Cade and Kate, get in the car, Josh and Kris we're leaving" I said getting in the car. Kate and Cade get in the car and I drive off

It was silent for the first 15 minutes until Cade spoke up

"I thought we told you to stay away from them," Cade said

"Hard to do that when they approach me" I state

"You should've walked away," Kate said

"My car was there, why would I walk away from my car?" I said. They both sigh

"They are bad news Jay, you need to try and stay away," Cade said

"Don't you think I know that, yet again hard to do that when they always approach me" I say

"Let's just hope you get your angel or demon tonight, they can protect you from them," Kate said

"Honey I can protect myself, I don't need protection from an angel or demon" I state

"Jay I worry about you a lot" Kate sighs

"I know" I smile.
