Sunset Conversation

Samy checked to make sure she looked okay one more time before she went into the living room to wait for Josh to come pick her up for the game. She on a black skirt and a dark red shirt with a semi-low v-neck that made her feel confident and sexy. She had a hard time deciding what to do with her hair and had finally decided to pin the hair around her face back, allowing the rest to cascade down her back. And, she had of course paid special attention to her make-up tonight; she wanted to make herself feel a little better after the fiasco at the ice cream shop.  Just as she was applying some lip gloss, the doorbell rang. She quickly finished, and ran to the front door, grabbing her purse off the couch on the way. She flung open the door to see Josh standing there, hands in his pockets. “I’m ready!” Samy said. “Wow! You look great!” Josh exclaimed. Then he smiled slyly at her and asked, “Trying to show David what he’s missing out on?” “No! Brittney can have him,” Samy said, blushing a bright shade of red. Josh just smiled and ushered her out the door and followed her to his truck. “So, how has your Saturday been?” Josh asked once he had backed out of the driveway. “It’s been fine. I finished my English paper and art project, so that’s good. Have you finished your English paper yet?” “Nope.” “Have you even started it yet?” “Nope.” “You know it’s due Monday, right?” Samy asked incredulously. “Yup. I still have tomorrow and Sunday to work on it. Unless you let me copy one of your old papers,” Josh answered, grinning at her. Samy just laughed and switched to talking about their family until they reached the house that the party was at. She suddenly felt a little nervous, and not sure that she wanted to go inside where there were going to be crowded rooms full of the popular kids from school.  Josh jumped out of the truck and started walking towards the house, taking a few steps before he realized that Samy was still sitting in the passenger seat. He hurried back to the truck and opened her door.  “Why are you still in the truck?” Josh asked. Samy forced a smile and answered, “I was waiting for you to do what you just did.” “Ask what you were doing?” Josh asked, confused. Samy giggled and said, “No! I was waiting for you to come open my door for me and play the part of a gentleman.” “Oh! Sorry. Just a little slow on the uptake tonight I guess,” Josh grinned, and bowed exaggeratedly after she got out. “Come on, let’s go in.” Samy swallowed nervously, still anxious about being here. “I need to call my mom about something really quick. I’ll come find you in just a minute.” Josh shrugged, smiled with uncertainty, and walked into the house.  Samy turned her back to the house and took some deep breaths, trying to convince herself that this was a good idea. ‘Why did I come? Who am I trying to prove anything to? This is not me…’ “It’s a lovely sunset, isn’t it?” a voice said close behind her. Samy spun around, startled, and was shocked to see David standing there. She could feel the intensity of his gaze. David sucked in a breath, again taken away by how beautiful she was, before he said, “I’m sorry if I startled you.” “It’s okay. It is a pretty sunset,” Samy answered, glancing at the array of colors across the sky that she had failed to notice in her state of anxiety before. “It’s a very pretty sunset,” David said, coming up to her. His gaze never wavered from her face. Samy just nodded and turned back around, not saying anything in response. ‘What was she supposed to say? She hadn’t planned on having any conversations with him, especially after what happened a few days ago,’ Samy thought. “Samy,” David stated, “I am so sorry for not standing up for you when Brittney was rude to you. I was a jerk for letting her say those things, and for just leaving. What Brittney was was not okay, and not true about you either. Will you please forgive me?” David had come around so that he was facing her again. Samy looked into his eyes to see if he was being sincere, and the anger that she had felt since the incident in the ice cream shop dissipated. She could see the regret in his eyes, his beautiful brown eyes.  “I forgive you,” Samy managed to whisper, caught in the spell of his eyes as they filled with hope at her forgiveness. A smile immediately spread across David’s face. “I have to make it up to you somehow…. Why don’t you come inside to the party with me?” David watched her facial expressions with eagerness; he had noticed the other day that they always betrayed her feelings. His brow wrinkled when he saw hurt flash across her face. “Isn’t Brittney here with you? I don’t think that’s such a good idea.” “Oh, yeah, she is. You’re probably right.” David looked down at his shoes, not sure what to say now that he had landed his foot right in his mouth.  “I’m here with Josh, anyways. So maybe I’ll see you in there at some point,” Samy said, giving a hesitant smile. David smiled back. “Yeah, okay.” “Well, I’m just going to go in now,” Samy said and started heading for the house, wanting to get away. Suddenly, she felt David grab her wrist. “Samy, wait. I really am sorry. You have to know that. And I want to be friends with you.” Before she could answer, and before he could stop himself, he enveloped her in a hug. Samy quickly pushed out of the embrace, even though it had her heart racing, and took a step back. She smiled at David and said, “Of course! I would love to be your friend. I’m going to find Josh now.” She hurried past him, questioning all of the mixed emotions that she was feeling at the moment.  David watched her go and wondered why his own heart was racing and he couldn’t think clearly after having Samy in his arms for a moment. It was supposed to be just a friendly hug. He hadn’t even given it a lot of thought. It had just kind of happened. Yes, she was pretty and he liked being around her, but he had a girlfriend, he reminded himself. He watched her walk into the house before slowly making his own way into the house, looking for Brittney.
