Chapter Two

652 Words
Lyra’s heart thundered in her chest as Kael’s hands tightened, just slightly, on her arms. His touch was electric, his fingers warm and calloused, igniting a fire beneath her skin. The logical part of her screamed to push him away, but the mate bond whispered other things—dangerous, intoxicating things. “You’re stubborn,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. Kael tilted his head, his golden eyes glinting with amusement. “And you’re fast. I’ll give you that.” Lyra clenched her jaw. She had no intention of letting him charm her into submission. Not tonight. Not ever. But her resolve wavered as he stepped even closer, their bodies a breath apart. His scent, a mix of pine and something darker, more primal, filled her senses. “Why me?” she asked, her voice trembling with a mix of defiance and desperation. “Of all the wolves, why did the Moon Goddess pick me for you?” Kael’s expression softened, though the intensity in his gaze never wavered. “I’ve asked myself the same question,” he admitted. His voice was quieter now, laced with a vulnerability she didn’t expect. “But the bond doesn’t lie, Lyra. It’s real. And whether we like it or not, we’re meant to be.” She shook her head, her auburn hair catching the moonlight. “I don’t believe in destiny. I won’t be some... some prize you can claim.” Kael’s lips twitched into a smirk, though his eyes held a hint of sadness. “A prize? Is that what you think this is?” He released her arms, his hands falling to his sides. “I don’t want a prize, Lyra. I want you. All of you. But I’ll fight for it—fight for us—if I have to.” She took a step back, her heel sinking into the cool sand at the water’s edge. “And if I don’t want to be fought for?” Kael’s smile faded, replaced by something raw and unguarded. “Then I’ll wait. As long as it takes. But make no mistake, Lyra—I’ll never stop wanting you. Never stop chasing you.” The intensity of his words sent a shiver down her spine. She hated how much they affected her, how much she wanted to believe him. But she couldn’t let herself fall into his orbit, couldn’t lose herself to a bond she hadn’t chosen. “You think you’re so noble,” she said, crossing her arms. “But this isn’t about me. It’s about you and what you want.” Kael’s jaw tightened, and for a moment, she saw the struggle within him. The battle between his instincts as an Alpha and his desire to honor her choices. “You’re wrong,” he said finally, his voice low and steady. “This is about us. About what we could be, if you’d just stop running long enough to see it.” Lyra’s chest ached with the weight of his words. She wanted to yell at him, to push him away, to escape the feelings that threatened to overwhelm her. But she couldn’t deny the truth. The mate bond was a fire she couldn’t put out, no matter how hard she tried. Kael stepped back, giving her space, though the tension between them remained palpable. “I won’t force you, Lyra,” he said quietly. “But I won’t give up on you, either.” Before she could respond, he turned and disappeared into the shadows, leaving her alone by the lake. Lyra sank to her knees, the cool water lapping at her ankles. Her heart raced, her mind a whirlwind of emotions. She wanted to hate him, to reject the bond and the future it promised. But deep down, a part of her whispered the truth she wasn’t ready to admit. She didn’t want him to stop chasing her.
