Chapter Eight

773 Words
The night air was cool against Lyra’s skin as she left the training grounds, her steps quick and uneven. Her body still hummed with adrenaline from the sparring match, but it wasn’t the fight that had her pulse racing—it was him. Kael had gotten under her skin, his golden eyes and teasing grin lingering in her thoughts. She hated how he made her feel, how easily he drew out emotions she’d buried long ago. “Lyra.” His voice stopped her in her tracks, deep and commanding, cutting through the quiet like a blade. She didn’t need to turn around to know he was there; she could feel him, his presence wrapping around her like a warm, suffocating cloak. “What do you want, Kael?” she asked, keeping her back to him. “I want to talk,” he said simply, his footsteps drawing closer. She turned to face him, her arms crossed defensively. “About what? How you just embarrassed me in front of half the pack?” Kael’s lips curved into a faint smile. “You didn’t embarrass yourself. You held your own. But that’s not what I meant.” Lyra rolled her eyes, her irritation masking the flutter in her chest. “Then what? What do you want from me?” Kael’s expression softened, and he took another step forward, closing the distance between them. “You,” he said quietly. “All of you. The real you, not the version you show the world.” Her breath caught at the intensity in his gaze. He wasn’t teasing now, wasn’t hiding behind his usual charm. There was a raw honesty in his voice that made her stomach twist. “You don’t know what you’re asking,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. Kael reached out, his hand brushing her arm. The touch was light, hesitant, but it sent a spark of heat through her. “Maybe not,” he admitted. “But I want to learn. I want to understand you, Lyra. I want to be someone you can trust.” She shook her head, stepping back. “Trust isn’t something I give freely. And it’s not something you can just... earn overnight.” “I know,” he said, his voice steady. “But I’m not going anywhere. I’ll wait as long as it takes.” The sincerity in his words was her undoing. She looked away, her chest tight with emotions she couldn’t name. Kael stepped closer, his warmth enveloping her. “You’re not alone anymore, Lyra,” he said softly. “You don’t have to carry this by yourself.” Before she could think, before she could stop herself, she turned to him, her hands fisting in his shirt as she pulled him closer. His eyes widened slightly, but he didn’t hesitate, his arms wrapping around her like they belonged there. The kiss was sudden, a collision of frustration and longing. His lips were warm and firm against hers, his breath hot as it mingled with her own. Lyra’s mind screamed at her to stop, to pull away, but her body betrayed her, leaning into him, craving the strength and heat he offered. Kael groaned softly, his hands sliding to her waist, pulling her closer. The tension between them, the unspoken desire that had simmered for weeks, exploded in that moment, consuming them both. Lyra broke the kiss first, her chest heaving as she stared up at him. “This doesn’t change anything,” she said, her voice trembling. Kael’s lips curved into a slow, knowing smile. “Doesn’t it?” She glared at him, though the effect was ruined by the heat in her cheeks. “You’re insufferable.” “And yet you kissed me,” he said, his voice low and teasing. Her jaw tightened, but she couldn’t deny it. She’d kissed him. And worse, she’d liked it. Kael stepped back, giving her space, though his eyes remained locked on hers. “I meant what I said, Lyra. I’ll wait. But I think you’re starting to realize something.” She raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms. “Oh? And what’s that?” His smile softened, and for once, there was no arrogance in it. Just a quiet confidence that made her heart ache. “That we’re stronger together.” He turned and walked away, leaving her standing in the moonlit clearing, her mind a whirlwind of emotions she wasn’t ready to face. But as she touched her lips, still tingling from his kiss, Lyra couldn’t deny the truth. Kael was breaking through her walls, one c***k at a time.
