Desi sat on the couch, her face buried in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably. Her whole body trembled, and the sound of her cries filled the living room. "I should have held his hand," she choked out between ragged breaths. "I should have— I should have stopped him!" Lucas paced back and forth, his jaw clenched so tight it ached. His hands balled into fists at his sides, his chest rising and falling with heavy, angry breaths. "How the hell did this happen?" he growled, his voice sharp and furious. He grabbed the lamp from the side table and hurled it across the room. It shattered against the wall, glass raining down onto the hardwood floor. "LUCAS!" Desi flinched, her eyes wide with shock.
