The sharp scent of gunpowder clung to Lucas’s clothes as he stormed into his office, slamming the door shut with enough force to rattle the glass. The click of the lock echoed in the room, a sharp punctuation to the chaos outside. Silence fell, heavy and suffocating. Lucas stood still, his chest heaving, his fingers curling around the edge of the mahogany desk. His knuckles turned white as he stared out of the floor-to-ceiling windows.
