CYRIL’S POV Raine fell asleep on my chest. Her breathing was soft, and slow like she hadn’t slept like this in years. She looked peaceful—too peaceful. And that alone made something inside me burn. I didn’t deserve her peace. But I’d be damned if I let anyone else ruin it. I scooped her up gently, careful not to wake her. She curled into me, as I carried her up the stairs and into her room. I laid her in bed, brushing strands of hair off her cheek. I pulled away when she stirred, afraid that I would wake her up. The second my phone buzzed, I declined the call.
