I stared at the stack of red envelopes on my desk, each one stamped with "FINAL NOTICE" in bold letters. My hands were shaking as I opened them one by one, reading demands for payment that I couldn't possibly meet. The office supply company wanted eight thousand dollars. The equipment rental company wanted fifteen thousand. My biggest supplier was threatening to sue me for thirty thousand dollars in unpaid invoices.
The worst part was the letter from my landlord. If I didn't pay three months of back rent by Friday - twelve thousand dollars - Fredrick Construction would be evicted from the only office space I could afford.
