Martina quickly ran into the bedroom. She took a small table and stood on it so that she will be able to lift the big bag on top of the wardrobe. When she held the bag, she pulled it toward her, to get a firm grip on it, then stepped down from the table. She quickly threw the bag on the bed, and opened the wardrobe.
She started bringing out her clothes, which she threw on the bed. She began to quickly fold them, while mumbling to herself. A few minutes later, Fred walked in, and found her closing her bag, ready to leave.
" What are you doing?" Fred asked, looking confused.
" What does it look like I am doing? I am leaving you. I am tired of you embarrassing me in front of my loved ones. I am tired of this marriage", Martina replied, catching her breath.
" You can't be serious, Martina. Please, I beg you. Whatever it is, just tell me, okay? We can work something out, please", Fred said, kneeling in front of Martina.
Martina put the bag on the ground, and folded her arms. She looked angry and did not even want to look at Fred. Fred, put his hand on the bag, trying to prevent Martina from leaving.
" I am sorry. But, I can't do this anymore. I don't love you anymore, Fred. I am sorry", Martina replied, a glint of guilt could be seen on her face.
" Martina, please look at me. Don't do this. Don't ruin our marriage. Don't ruin our family. I am willing to do anything you want, please don't do this to me", Fred began to cry.
He felt helpless. He could not understand why Martina fell out of love with him. What did he do wrong? He is not perfect, but he knows he tried his best to make Martina happy. So, what went wrong?
" If I did anything wrong, I am sorry. But, I want to know what I did to make you hurt me this way. Please Martina, think of our son. What will I tell him? Please", Fred begged.
" I am sorry, but I have to go", Martina said and picked the bag. She walked out the door, with Fred following right on heels.
Fred continued to bed her to listen to him but she was determined to leave. She managed to get the heavy bag downstairs after Fred tried to stop her and hurriedly walked to the front door. Fred quickly walked towards her and blocked the entrance.
" Fred, get out of my way! I don't have time for this", Martina said, flatly.
" Please, tell me what I did wrong. What did I do for you suddenly want to do this? Please, Martina. I beg you in the name of God, don't leave", Fred continued to beg, while tears streamed down his face.
Martina looked unfazed by the distress her husband was going through. She wanted to just leave and be free from him and that was what she was going to do.
" Listen, Fred. You are very handsome and intelligent. You can find any woman to love you. Just let me go, I am not the woman for you. I am sorry", Martina said.
Fred got up and wiped his face. " Okay, if you want to go, then fine. But can you go tomorrow morning, at least? It's dark outside. And it's dangerous to be on your own at this time. Please, at least do this for me".
" No, Fred. I am leaving now and don't try to stop me", Martina said, firmly.
Fred breathed in deeply and stepped aside. Martina walked past him, and put her bag into her car. She came back and found Fred sitting on the large chair in the living room, looking dejected. She stood by his side, and looked at him.
" I will send my lawyer to bring you the divorce papers. The sooner we get this over with, the better", she turned and left him alone.
Fred remained quiet. He just turned and watched Martina leave without trying to stop her. He lied down on the chair, and brought his knees to his chest. He began to shed uncontrolled tears that had been threatening to fall all along. His heartbreaking cries could heard in the whole house. He did not even noticed when he fell asleep.
He woke up to the sound of someone calling his name.
" Fred! Fred! Wake up, it's already morning", Linda gently shook him.
Fred sat up. His eyes were swollen from all the tears and he looked like he had not slept at all. Linda sat close to him and held his shoulder. She looked very worried.
" Fred, what happened? Did you sleep here the whole of last night?"
Fred looked around, tiredly, yawning and stretching himself. " Where is Junior? I thought you were bringing him".
" Martina called me earlier this morning and asked me to take him to school. She actually dropped by with his uniform. Fred, you still haven't answered me, what happened?" Linda explained.
Fred looked like he was about to cry again. The mention of Martina's name brought him pain all over again. And last nights events were still fresh in his mind.
" She left me, Linda, she left me", Fred lamented.
" Who left you? I don't understand", Linda looked more confused now.
" Martina. She left. She said she was tired of this marriage. She said she does not love me anymore, Linda. I tried everything in my power to make her happy. Her happiness was my happiness. Her sadness was mine as well. Yet, she left. She did not even care about how I felt, Linda. What did I do to her? What did I do to deserve this?" Fred turned his head toward Linda, while fresh tears fell from his face.
" But when did this happen? When did she leave?" Linda questioned.
" Last night. She left last night, after we had gone to see her parents. I only asked them to talk to her about her recent behavior. That's all. I never knew she will use that against me to leave me and our son. How do I tell my son that his mother won't be coming back? How do I explain this to him?" Fred cried harder.
" I - I don't know what to say. I would never have imagined Martina doing this. Something must be wrong. This is not right", Linda said, trying to understand the whole situation.
" What do I do now? How do I cope? This hurts so much. It's hurts so much, Linda".
Linda hugged him, while he cried on her shoulder. Seeing Fred like this broke her heart into a million pieces. She decided to do something. She needed to help her friend. She needed to help Fred overcome his pain.
