Chapter 5: The Open Gate

432 Words
The boys gathered around the hidden door beneath the carpet and tried everything to open it. Rickey used the hammer, Rockey forced the edges with a crowbar, and Alex tried cutting it with a saw, but nothing worked. The door seemed indestructible. Then Vickey suddenly remembered something important. Years ago, his father had bought a huge ancient hammer from an old antique auction. The seller at the auction claimed the hammer was thousands of years old and strangely connected to something called “The Open Gate.” Thinking it might help, the boys secretly brought the hammer from Vickey’s house and hid it at Rickey’s place, planning to return on Sunday. When Sunday arrived, they carried the hammer—packed inside a heavy box—through the forest using Vickey’s bicycle because the weight was too much for the others. After struggling to lift it onto the roof of the house, they lowered it through the chimney and finally opened the box. Inside was a massive ancient hammer. One side had the symbol “G,” while the other side had the words: “THE OPEN GATE.” To their shock, the exact same “G” symbol was carved into the hidden door. Realizing the hammer was connected to the door, the boys struck it once. Nothing happened. They hit it a second time. Still nothing. But on the third strike, the symbol on the door suddenly glowed bright white. A flash of light filled the room, and the entire door disappeared. In its place remained a dark glowing opening leading into complete darkness. To test it, Rickey dropped a marble into the opening. Instead of falling normally, the marble suddenly moved sideways inside, as if gravity had changed. Curious, Alex carefully entered the opening. From the others’ point of view, he appeared to be standing sideways inside the darkness. When they pulled him back out, Alex explained that everything inside felt normal, but from within, the doorway itself was invisible. The boys spent the next week searching libraries for answers but found nothing useful. Finally, they visited Vickey’s father and asked him more about the auction. He explained that during the antique auction, the hammer was sold together with a strange old dusty book. The seller warned everyone that both items were connected and should never be separated. After searching through his bookshelf, Vickey’s father finally found the book and handed it to the boys. They were shocked immediately. The cover had the exact same symbol as the hammer and doorway, along with the title: “THE OPEN GATE.”
