The Festival Trap🍁

1200 Words
The fall festival hit Ridgeview High like a tidal wave of cotton candy and chaos. By Saturday evening, the football field behind the school had transformed into a carnival wonderland: strings of fairy lights draped between booths, the air thick with the smell of popcorn, fried dough, and that unmistakable autumn chill. Music pumped from speakers some pop playlist mixed with classic fall hits and laughter echoed everywhere. Couples held hands, groups of friends screamed on the makeshift rides, and kids ran wild with face paint and stuffed animals. I stood near the entrance, hands shoved deep in my hoodie pockets, scanning the crowd. My stomach was a knot of nerves. Last night, after that threatening DM, I'd barely slept. Who sent it? How did they know the account was... about Lila? I'd started @HeartstringsHigh for everyone, sure, but deep down, yeah every match was practice. Learning how people clicked, what made sparks fly, all so maybe one day I'd have the courage to tell her how I felt. But now, anonymity was gone. The exposure video had hit 50K views overnight. My phone buzzed constantly with notifications: old matches thanking me, new requests pouring in, and a few haters calling me a creep. Alex had texted me a dozen times: Dude, you're famous. Own it! I hadn't told him about the threat yet. I needed to see how this played out. "Eli!" Lila's voice cut through the noise like a beacon. I turned, and there she was, weaving through the crowd with that effortless grace. She wore a denim jacket over a flowy white top, jeans tucked into boots, her auburn hair loose and catching the lights. She looked... perfect. "Hey," I said, forcing a smile as she reached me. "You made it." "Of course! Couldn't miss planning Operation Lucas." She grinned, linking her arm through mine like it was the most natural thing. My heart stuttered. "Where do we start? Observation mode?" I nodded, trying to play it cool. "Yeah. Lucas is supposedly here with some of the soccer guys. We find him, I assess, then coach you on approach." "You're like a dating spy," she teased, bumping my shoulder. "How do you even do this? Read minds?" "Observation," I said. "People give away everything if you pay attention." We wandered into the heart of the festival. Booths lined the field: ring toss, balloon darts, a haunted tunnel made from black plastic and fog machines. The art booth-booth 7 was up ahead, where Sophia would be painting faces or selling sketches. I'd check on Jordan later; the poll and DM should have worked their magic. First, Lucas. We spotted him near the basketball shoot-out game. Tall, tousled blond hair, wearing a leather jacket that screamed "effortlessly cool." He was laughing with Jordan and a few other guys, sinking shots like it was nothing. Girls nearby were glancing his way, giggling. "There," Lila whispered, squeezing my arm. "God, he's even cuter up close." I swallowed the jealousy. "Solid choice. Confident, athletic, social. You two would vibe debate meets music." She bit her lip. "But how do I talk to him? I'm good at arguing cases, not... flirting." "Easy," I said, switching to matchmaker mode. It hurt, but it was familiar. "Find common ground. I heard he plays guitar ask about his favorite songs. Or mention chem class, joke about the last lab disaster." She nodded, eyes bright. "You're a genius. Stay close? Moral support?" "Sure." As we approached, my phone buzzed in my pocket the burner. I ignored it for now. Lucas noticed us first. "Hey, Lila, right? Chem partners?" She smiled, that magnetic one. "Guilty. This is my friend Eli." His eyes flicked to me, recognition dawning. "Wait you're the matchmaker guy! The video's everywhere." Great. "Uh, yeah." "Dude, that's awesome. Half my old school needed someone like you." He laughed, easy and genuine. No malice. Compatibility with Lila: still high. We chatted small talk about the festival, classes. Lila was nailing it, laughing at his jokes, asking about his guitar. Chemistry sparked right there, and it killed me. Then, a distraction: over at the art booth, I spotted Jordan arriving, looking around nervously. Sophia was there, painting a kid's face as a tiger. He approached, said something her eyes lit up. Boom. Match #48 in progress. I excused myself for a second. "Bathroom run. Be right back." Lila waved me off, deep in conversation with Lucas. I slipped toward the art booth, hiding behind a cotton candy stand to observe. Jordan handed Sophia a ticket for a sketch. She smiled shyly, started drawing him. He grinned like an i***t. Success. But as I turned back, my burner buzzed again. Persistent. I checked: another DM from the unknown account. Good job with Jordan and Sophia. But don't forget our deal. Push Lila toward Lucas, or I spill everything. Starting with this photo. Attached: a screenshot. Me, last year, drafting a post about "crushes on childhood friends" with notes in the margin: "For Lila?" My blood ran cold. How? Another message: Festival's fun, isn't it? Look behind you. I spun. Nothing. Just crowds. Paranoia set in. Was someone watching? I headed back to Lila and Lucas. They were at the ring toss now, him winning her a stuffed bear. She hugged it, beaming at him. "Eli!" she called. "Lucas says there's a guitar thing later by the bonfire. Join us?" "Uh, maybe. Gotta check on something." Her face fell a bit. "You okay? You've been weird since yesterday." "I'm fine. Just... the exposure thing." She touched my arm. "Hey, it's cool. You're a hero to a lot of people." If only she knew. As the night wore on, we wandered more. Lila and Lucas hit it off talking music, school, dreams. I coached from the sidelines: subtle nods, texted tips when apart. It was torture, watching her light up for him. Then, the midpoint twist. Near the ferris wheel, Alex found me. "Eli! There you are. Lila's glowing with that new guy." "Yeah," I muttered. He pulled me aside. "Listen, about the video who do you think posted it?" "No idea." He hesitated. "I... might have an idea. Remember that party last month? You were drunk rare for you and mumbled something about the account being for 'her.' I thought you meant some girl, but..." My stomach dropped. "Alex?" "No! I didn't post it. But I told one person. In confidence." "Who?" "Jordan. He was asking about crushes, and it slipped." Jordan? But he was one of my matches now. Before I could process, my burner buzzed: Close, but not quite. Keep helping Lila, or next reveal: your full confession draft. The one you never sent. Attached: a note I'd written months ago, unsent: "Lila, I've liked you since we were kids..." Panic surged. Whoever this was, they had access to my stuff. Hacked? Or closer than I thought? The festival lights blurred as I looked at Lila, laughing with Lucas by the bonfire. I had to play along for now. But I needed to find this blackmailer. Little did I know, the real twist was waiting: Lucas wasn't just the perfect guy. He was part of the game.
