Chapter 3

I clutched the medicine bottle tightly. Just as I was about to twist the cap open, a cold voice rang out behind me. "Even in this state, you still can't forget about work, Ms. Shaw?" My entire body froze, and my hand tightened around the bottle. Simon strolled over, lazily nudging my briefcase with the toe of his shoe. "You hid this pretty well, Ms. Shaw. Who knew you had another treasure tucked away?" I tried to hide the bottle behind my back, but he snatched it away. As I struggled and reached out to claw it back, he shoved me ruthlessly onto the sofa. Squatting down, Simon whispered in a voice dripping with venom, "Why are you struggling? You heard everything we said just now, didn't you, Ms. Shaw? Don't worry. Once you're dead, your shares, your position, everything that belongs to you, will be in my very capable hands." My entire body trembled with rage. Even if I died, I couldn't let those bastards win! Summoning every last ounce of my strength, I lunged forward and grabbed Simon's wrists with both arms, desperately trying to wrest the bottle back. Caught off guard, he stumbled backward from the impact before raising his fist and punching me hard in the shoulder. I coughed up a trace of blood, and all the strength drained from my arms. I collapsed limply onto the floor. "Evelyn! Have you lost your mind?" Damian's voice thundered from the doorway as he strode in, his face livid. Simon quickly scrambled to his feet, his voice instantly turning pathetic. "Mr. Hale! Thank goodness you're back! I saw that Ms. Shaw wasn't feeling well and came over to help her up, but she suddenly went crazy and tried to attack me. Look, she grabbed my wrists so hard she left red marks!" He deliberately held up his wrists, showing off the faint red lines. Damian's face darkened instantly. "Evelyn, you've gone too far! It's bad enough that you're faking an illness to delay the negotiations, but now you're resorting to physical violence? Simon was only trying to help you. How could you treat him like this?" "I didn't..." I rasped, trembling on the floor. "He took my medicine... I'm really having a heart attack... If I don't get my medicine, I'm going to die..." "You're still lying!" Simon immediately cut me off, putting on a deeply wronged expression. "Mr. Hale, I really just wanted to show some concern for Ms. Shaw. I never expected her to try and hit me, let alone turn around and slander me like this!" The look Damian gave me grew completely cold. "Evelyn, stop throwing these tantrums! Everyone has prepared for this negotiation for so long. Stop wasting everyone's time!" "Seriously, can we please stop this nonsense? The merger partners are already displeased," one subordinate complained. Another chimed in, "Ms. Shaw is being way too self-centered. Just because she can't eat spicy food, she has to embarrass all of us." More grumbles from the staff echoed through the private dining room. So, all our years of working together meant absolutely nothing to them. An icy numbness seeped through my heart, chilling me to the core. Looking at the way Damian shielded Simon, and seeing the sheer disgust in his eyes, I found the whole situation painfully ironic. The fiancé I had loved with all my heart wouldn't even believe me when my life was on the line. Taking a deep, agonizing breath, I said, "Damian, let's break off the engagement."
