The night came like a living thing.
The full moon rose high over Ravenwood, silver and unforgiving, spilling its light across the forest like liquid steel. Shadows stretched unnaturally, twisting around the trees, crawling toward me, whispering secrets I wasn’t supposed to hear. My pulse raced, and the mark on my collarbone pulsed in time with it, silver fire coursing beneath my skin like molten lava.
Lucien led me into the clearing, the same one where everything had begun, but tonight it was different. The air shimmered with raw power, charged with the pull of the moon and the pack’s restless energy. Wolves’ howls echoed through the trees, each note vibrating through the earth and into my chest, shaking me to my core.
“Aria,” Lucien said softly, his hand brushing mine. The contact alone made my skin sing. “You’re ready… or you will be, if you let yourself.”
I swallowed hard. “Ready for what?”
He turned to face me fully, silver eyes reflecting the moonlight like molten metal. “Ready to embrace the bond. The lunar shift begins tonight. You’ll feel it, completely. Every part of you… human, wolf… everything tied to me.”
I backed up instinctively. “Everything?”
“Yes,” he said, voice low, vibrating with both warning and longing. “And if you resist, it will hurt. If you fight it… it could kill you.”
My heart thudded painfully. “And if I don’t resist?”
“Then…” His gaze darkened, almost feral. “Then you will belong to me. To the pack. To the moon. Fully.”
I swallowed again, fear and desire mixing so violently my stomach lurched. The pull in my veins was already unbearable, tugging me toward him, toward something I didn’t understand but couldn’t ignore.
The pack circled us, silent now, watching. Selene was at the edge, her gaze sharp and predatory, hatred radiating in waves. She snarled softly, low in her throat, clearly restrained by Lucien’s dominance, but I could sense the tension coiling around her like a spring ready to snap.
Lucien reached for me, hand warm and firm on my shoulder. “Stay close. Don’t panic.”
I nodded, trying to ground myself as a wave of heat surged through me. My senses exploded. I could hear every heartbeat in the forest, every whisper of wind, and every scuff of paws on dirt. My vision sharpened until I could see the pack’s breathing, the subtle twitch of muscles, and the scent of tension in the air. Every instinct in me screamed to run, but my body moved toward Lucien instead, drawn by a force I couldn’t resist.
The first shift hit me like a tidal wave. Pain and pleasure merged into something primal. My nails dug into his chest as my body trembled, spine arching involuntarily.
Lucien gritted his teeth, one hand supporting my back, the other braced against the ground to steady himself. His wolf flickered, ghost-like, manifesting beneath the surface, coiling around us both.
“Aria… focus on my voice,” he urged. “Let it guide you.”
I tried, desperate, as heat flared from the mark. My blood sang, every cell alive, every nerve screaming. My heart pounded against his chest, synchronized with his, synchronized with the moon.
The second wave came, sharper and more insistent. My vision blurred and refocused, showing the forest not as it was, but as it truly was. Shadows moved with minds of their own. Trees bent slightly toward me, as if acknowledging my presence. The pack’s forms shimmered, wolf and human shifting fluidly. I stumbled, dizzy, overwhelmed by everything I was suddenly capable of perceiving.
Lucien caught me, lips pressing briefly to my temple to steady me. “You’re doing it,” he whispered. “You’re surviving it. Good…”
The third wave struck without warning, and I cried out, part human, part something else. My claws dug into his shoulders as my teeth ached, hunger and instinct roaring through me. Every thought dissolved into the raw, pulsing need to claim him, be with him, and answer the bond calling from deep inside me.
Lucien’s silver eyes burned into mine. “Aria… control it. Don’t lose yourself.”
“I can’t,” I gasped, voice trembling, “It’s too strong.”
“You are yourself,” he said fiercely, pressing a hand to my jaw, forcing me to meet his gaze. “But we’re tied. Don’t fight it alone. Let me guide you.”
Somewhere between instinct and will, I leaned into him, letting the bond take what it needed. Fire coursed through my veins, every nerve alight, every sense alive. I could feel his heartbeat inside me, his wolf brushing against mine, and for the first time, I understood: the bond wasn’t just possession. It was a connection.
The pack’s howls rose together, a choir of approval and warning. Selene’s howl cut through like a knife, furious but restrained. She had no claim over me. Only he did.
The mark glowed brightly, the silver crescent wrapping around my collarbone, spreading slightly to my shoulder as if the moon itself were branding me. Pain flared, sharp, but under it, something shifted, something good, almost intoxicating. My body wasn’t human anymore. My senses weren’t just enhanced; they were perfected.
And I wanted more.
Lucien’s hands gripped my waist, anchoring me to him. “It’s over,” he said, though his voice trembled. “You’re mine now.”
The words sent a shiver through me. My lips parted, breath shallow, and heart pounding so hard I feared it might burst from my chest. “Yours?” I whispered.
“Yes,” he said, low, dangerous, and primal. “Mine.”
The world tilted around me. Pain, pleasure, fear, and exhilaration collided inside until there was only one truth: I was no longer human. Not fully. Not alone. I belonged to him, and the moon had claimed me.
Selene’s howl cut through the forest again, sharp and furious. “This isn’t over!”
I didn’t care. Not anymore.
Lucien pulled me closer, forehead resting against mine, silver eyes glowing under the full moon. “And for tonight,” he whispered, “no one will touch you. I promise.”
The bond flared once more, powerful and undeniable. The forest held its breath, and the moon shone down like a witness to our claim.
I was his.
The Alpha. The pack. The moon itself, everything had been chosen, and so had I.
And deep down, I knew this was only the beginning.
