CHAPTER SEVEN: The Alpha’s Control Slips

The fire inside me didn’t fade. It grew. Every breath I took felt heavier, thicker, like the air itself had weight. My skin buzzed, nerves humming so loudly it was almost painful. The room was too bright, too loud; every sound sharpened until it scraped against my skull. I could hear them. The pack. Their heartbeats thudded like drums. Their breaths carried scents, anger, fear, and hunger so vivid I nearly gagged. I clutched Lucien’s shirt, fingers digging into the fabric as my knees threatened to give way. “Lucien,” I whispered, terrified, “something’s wrong with me.” His arms tightened instantly, anchoring me. “I know,” he murmured. “Just breathe. Focus on my voice.” Selene watched us with narrowed eyes. “You’re already too late.” Lucien shot her a warning look sharp enough to cut glass. “Leave.” “You don’t give that order lightly,” she replied coolly. “Not when the pack’s future is at stake.” “The pack’s future is my responsibility,” Lucien growled. “And I say she stays.” A murmur rippled through the room, uneasy, disapproving. I forced myself to stand straighter, even as another wave of heat crashed through me. “If you’re going to talk about my future,” I said hoarsely, “do it like I’m actually here.” Several wolves turned to stare at me in open shock. Selene arched a brow. “You have spirit. I’ll give you that.” “I don’t want your approval,” I snapped. “I want answers.” Lucien looked torn, jaw clenched so tightly a muscle jumped. “Aria.” “No,” I said, cutting him off. “You don’t get to protect me from the truth anymore. You already bit me. Whatever’s happening… I deserve to know.” The room fell silent. Finally, Lucien exhaled slowly. “The bond has stages.” My heart pounded. “Stages?” “The first is recognition,” he said. “The pull. The mark. You felt it last night.” I nodded shakily. “The second,” he continued, “is ignition. That’s what you’re experiencing now.” Ignition. That explained the fire. “And the third?” I asked, afraid of the answer. Lucien hesitated. Selene smiled. “Completion.” My stomach twisted. “What happens then?” Lucien met my gaze, silver eyes dark with fear and longing. “If completed, the bond becomes permanent. You would be tied to me. To the pack. To the moon.” “And if it’s not?” I whispered. “Your body will keep fighting it,” Selene answered coldly. “Until it either adapts… or breaks.” The word echoed in my chest. Breaks. Lucien’s growl was low and lethal. “Enough.” Selene stepped back, hands raised in mock surrender. “I’m only telling her what you won’t.” My vision blurred, spots dancing in front of my eyes. “Lucien,” I breathed, “I don’t think I have a choice.” Another surge hit me, stronger than before. My nails dug into his arm, and I gasped as something sharp pressed beneath my skin. Lucien hissed softly. “What?” I asked, panic flooding me. “Your senses,” he said. “They’re sharpening.” I sucked in a breath and nearly choked. I could smell the rain hours before it would fall. The wood of the floor beneath my feet. The iron tang of blood from a cut on someone’s knuckle across the room. I staggered. “Make it stop.” Lucien’s grip tightened. “I can’t.” Selene’s eyes gleamed. “She’s changing faster than expected.” “Get out,” Lucien snarled. “No,” Selene said firmly. “If she loses control, the pack needs to be here.” “Or you want to witness it,” he shot back. She didn’t deny it. My heart raced, fear spiraling out of control, and with it, something darker stirred. A growl vibrated in my chest before I even realized it was mine. The sound shocked the room into silence. Lucien froze. So did I. “I.” My voice broke. “Did you hear that?” Selene’s smile was sharp as a blade. “Oh yes.” Heat surged violently, tearing through me as a pulse of power rippled outward. The lights flickered. Glass rattled. Lucien swore. “That’s enough,” he said urgently. “You’re coming with me.” “Where?” I gasped. “Somewhere safe,” he replied. “Before the pack pushes you too far.” Selene stepped into his path. “You can’t hide her forever.” “I’m not hiding her,” he snapped. “I’m stabilizing her.” She studied him carefully. “You’re risking everything.” Lucien didn’t look away. “I already have.” For a long moment, Selene held his gaze. Then she stepped aside. “For now,” she said. “But when the moon rises again, this becomes a pack matter.” Lucien didn’t respond. He scooped me up before my legs could give out, holding me close as he carried me down the hallway and out of the house. The night air hit my skin like ice, shocking and sharp. I buried my face in his chest, breathing in his scent of pine, earth, and something wild and intoxicating. “Lucien,” I whispered, voice trembling, “I’m scared.” His arms tightened around me. “I know.” “Are you?” I asked. He hesitated. “Yes,” he admitted. “Because if I lose control again…” He didn’t finish. The forest swallowed us as he ran, the world blurring into streaks of shadow and moonlight. My body hummed with energy, every sense alive, every instinct screaming. When he finally stopped, we stood at the edge of an ancient, quiet clearing humming with power. The same place as the first night. Sacred ground. Lucien set me down carefully, hands lingering at my waist longer than necessary. His breathing was uneven now, control fraying. “This place amplifies the bond,” he said. “It will either calm you… or finish what the bite started.” My heart pounded. “And you brought me here anyway?” “I had no other choice,” he said hoarsely. Another wave hit me, stronger, deeper, dragging something raw to the surface. I cried out, clutching my chest as the mark flared blinding silver. Lucien’s eyes flashed. “Aria,” he warned, voice rough, “don’t look at me like that.” “Like what?” I gasped. “Like you’re calling to my wolf.” The pull between us snapped tight, unbearable. I took an unsteady step toward him. He stepped back. “Stop,” he growled. “I can’t,” I whispered. “It hurts when I don’t.” His control cracked. In a blink, he was in front of me, hands gripping my arms, silver eyes blazing. His breath was hot against my skin, his voice trembling. “If I touch you now,” he said, “I won’t be able to stop.” My heart raced. “Then don’t stop.” The words slipped out before fear could stop them. Lucien froze. The moon above us burned brighter. And I knew deep in my bones that whatever happened next would change everything.
