Ava spent three days locked in the pack's library. She pored over ancient texts, pack history books, books about the Nightshade family lineage, and information texts about vampire-werewolf hybrids. It was in these texts that she finally found something.
The healer burst into Killian’s office, carrying a stack of ancient books. Her hair was a mess, dark circles sat beneath her eyes. But she looked excited, which immediately worried everyone.
“What did you find?” Killian asked
Ava dropped three massive books onto his desk, dust exploded everywhere. Lucas coughed, Ethan swore. But Ava ignored them both.
“I found it”
“Found what?”
Ava opened one of the books. The pages looked older than all of them, some of the writing was faded. Killian read, he found the word he was looking for. A prophecy. The room fell completely silent. Ava pointed to a passage.
“This was hidden inside an old hybrid text.”
Killian leaned closer, Lucas and Ethan followed. The words written in an old language, fortunately Ava had already translated it. She swallowed, she began reading.
“When moon and blood become one.
The daughter of two kingdoms shall rise
Born of wolf and vampire
Lost beneath shadow
Hidden among enemies.
The child shall return.”
Lucas looked up
“s**t”
Ava nodded slowly.
“There’s more.”
She continued
“She shall possess the power of
Moonlight and blood.
The darkness shall fear her,
The lost heir shall either unite
The kingdoms….
Or destroy them all.”
No one spoke, all too shocked by the new information. There was absolutely no doubt that this was about Becs. This was too big to keep from her, Killian knew he needed to talk to her and show her this text.
After lunch Killian found Becs sitting under a tree watching warriors train. She looked peaceful, happy for the first time in a long time. Which made what he had to tell her significantly harder.
Becs was watching warriors train, she heard him before she saw him. Killian, she smiled. But when she looked up to greet him, her smile vanished .
“Oh, no”
Killian sat beside her
“What?”
“You have your serious face.”
“I’m always serious”
“Okay yeah, but not with me. And you look very serious right now.”
Before Killian could answer, Lucas and Ava joined them under the tree. Now Becs started to get worried.
“Okay, why are you two here?”
She asked, pointing to Lucas and Ava. Neither spoke, yep something was definitely wrong. Killian reached for her hand, the bond hummed. The contact felt comforting and kept her grounded.
“We’ve discovered some information. It’s stuff you need to know.”
Becs immediately hated this. Thirty minutes later, she hated it all even more.
“Okay, let me get this straight. The Rogue King is my uncle?”
Killian nodded, Becs started to feel dizzy and her stomach turned.
“No, no.”
“Unfortnatly yes.”
Becs stood, she started to pace. She would stop turning to them about to say something, only to close her mouth and start pacing again.
“My uncle killed my parents, his brother, and his family.”
She felt like she had to say this all out loud, if she said it out loud herself then she couldn't deny it.
“My uncle destroyed the kingdom.”
Killian only nodded his head. The realization hurt, far more than she expected. Becs looked towards the mountains, thinking about her family, about the man that became a monster. After letting that information sink in Killian had Becs sit back down.
Ava then explained the prophecy. She just stared at Ava, this somehow felt worse than finding out her uncle killed her parents.
“A prophecy?”
Ava nodded.
“The books specifically described a hybrid princess.”
Becs buried her face in her hands, of course there was a prophecy. Why wouldn’t there be? Apparently her life wasn’t complicated enough already.
That evening–
Seraphina found Becs sitting alone in the garden, she smiled at Becs softly.
“May I join you?”
Becs nodded, for a while they sat in comfortable silence. The Becs asked the question she’s been carrying with her, her whole life.
“What was my mother like?”
Seraphina’s expression softened, her eyes got brighter thinking about Lyra. She almost looked younger.
“Your mother was the kindest and gentalest person I ever knew.”
“Thats what everyone has said.”
“Becasue it’s the truth.”
Seraphina looked towards the sky, then she continued.
“She knew every servant by name.”
Becs laughed
“Really?”
“Every single one”
They sat there for two hours. Becs learned about her mother, about how she was a strong queen, a loving wife, a protective mother, a loyal friend and a fierce leader. Eventually she asked another question that nagged her.
“What about her wolf?"
Seraphina blinked, surprised by the question. Few vampires knew about Lyra being a werewolf.
“Your mother was born into one of the strongest pack in our history.”
“Tell me, please”
For the next thirty minuets she told Becs about Rowan, her grandfather. The legendary Alpha, a feared warrior and a devoted father. For the first time Becs learned she hadn’t only lost one family, she lost two. Last question Becs had, she hesitated to ask, but she gathered her courage and asked it anyway.
“Did my mother know?”
Seraphina frowned
“Know what?”
“That the Rogue King was her brother-in-law?”
Silence. Seraphina’s expression darkened as she spoke.
“Yes”
“What was he like?”
Seraphina’s answer surprised Becs, but it somehow was the most painful answer she’d heard.
“He wasn’t always a monster.”
Over the last week, there have been strange things happening to Becs. At first it felt like she was being pulled towards something, then she would hear faint whispers. At first she ignored it, but now the pull was so strong and the whisper was no longer faint. Eventually her curiosity won, the pull guided her through forgotten corridors, down old staircases and past sealed doors. Deeper and deeper beneath the fortress, until she stood before a stone wall.
At first glance with looked ordinary. Then moonlight struck its surface, a crest appeared. Her crest, House of Nightshade. Then she felt the pull grow stronger, slowly she pressed her hand to the cold stone. Silver light exploded, long dormant magic awakened. The wall opened, a hidden chamber revealed itself. Becs stepped inside, and immediately forgot how to breathe, the room was enormous. Ancient books lined the walls, portraits covered every surface, there were weapons, maps, journals, and family records. Everything, a hidden archive, a hidden history. Her history.
In the center of the room stood a marble statue. A woman, long hair, kind eyes and a graceful smile. Her mother, tears filled her eyes. Then she noticed the charm, a silver moon pendant handing around the statues neck. The moment she stepped closer, it glowed. Magic filled the chamber, then a voice echoed through the room.
“My little moon”
Becs froze, no. It’s impossible. The statue glowed brighter, then her mothers voice returned.
“If your hearing this, then you survived.”
Tears spilled down Becs’s cheeks, the words shattered her. The message continued with warnings about the Rogue King, about her powers, and about abilities unique to hybrid royals. Moonfie, blood magic and shadow resistance. Finally the message ended with.
“My little moon, if I can not be there. Know that I loved you everyday of my life.”
The message ended, Becs was left alone in the silence. She could no longer stand and her legs gave out and she fell to the floor next to the statue. Heartbroken. Then she felt a hand touch her shoulder, she looked up to find Killian kneeling next to her. Concern filled his eyes, and without a word he pulled her gently into his arms.
Becs buried her face in his chest, and cried. She cried for her lost childhood, for her parents, for her family. Killian sat there and held her. Silently telling her she wasn’t alone. She cried herself to sleep, Killian sat with her in his arms until he knew she was completely out. He stood, carrying Becs back to their room and placed her gently in bed. He pulled the bed covered over her and kissed her forehead.
He himself was about to get in bed beside her, when a frantic mindlink from one of the warriors at the border came through.
Alpha, there is someone here from the southern kingdom. They say it’s important.
Killian groaned before replying.
Show them to the council chambers, and mindlink Lucas and Ethan to meet me there.
Yes Alpha
With that the link was cut off and Killian walked to the first floor where the council chambers was located. Lucas and Ethan were arriving at the same time.
“What happened?” Lucas asked with a hit of annoyance in his voice
Before Killian could respond the door opened and two warriors escorted in an Alpha messenger from the southern territory. The messenger bowed before Killian and handed him a letter. Killian tore it open, the moment he read it his blood ran cold. Lucas and Ethan saw it, Killian slowly lowered the letter.
“What did it say?” Lucas asked
Ethan took the letter and read it
“The Rogue King” Killian replied.
The room was silent, you could hear a pin drop.
“What about him?”
Killian looked toward the dark horizon, he didn’t replay. He just stared. The next words came from Ethan.
“He had begun assembling his army”
And for the first time in decades… The supernatural world stood on the edge of another kingdom-shattering war, and it once again involved Princess Becs.
