Ari's POINT OF VIEW
I was chipper this morning. My heart was bursting with excitement because it was my birthday – July 7th.
I turned 18 today and, for the first time, I was going to shift also. I couldn't wait to see what my wolf looked like.
Would it be different?
"Today is going to be a good day!" I yelled in the shower as I got ready for school. It didn't take me long to leave the shower, put on my uniform, dust my face with powder, blush and some lipgloss for the final touch. As for my hair, well, all I did was section the curls into layers, making it fuller.
I was set to go.
I rushed down the stairs as I picked up the sandwich my mother had packed for me, kissed both my parents goodbye without even waiting for them to wish me a happy birthday.
"I gotta go, mum. I can't be late," I said as I dashed for the door. Looking at my dad too, "Dad, we can celebrate when I get back from school!"
The ride to school on the bus felt like an eternity because all I could think about was the possibility of finding my mate anywhere, but then I noticed something strange. My senses of smell and hearing were heightened.
Was this my wolf rearing her head? The thought ran through my mind. Even in class, I wasn't paying attention to the teachers, and before I knew it, it was time for lunch break.
"What exactly happened? Did I space out?" I asked, complaining to Jesse as she caught up with me and asked me what was going on… basically looking for updates.
"Well, tell me."
Rolling my eyes, I tried to hide a giggle. "There's nothing to tell, Jesse. All I know is that my senses of smell and hearing are more heightened now."
"Ohhhh, yeah!! She's coming out!" She said, shaking her shoulders in excitement. I guess she felt this way because she was happy for me. We were both going to turn 18 this year, but I was older than her by a month.
"Shhhh." I shushed her. "Someone might hear you."
When we got to the cafeteria, we ordered our meals and went to our favorite spot at the back where we could see everyone and everything happening.
Taking out the sandwich my mom packed for me as lunch, I was caught off guard by the wonderful smell of Cedarwood and mint. It smelled heavenly.
"I can smell it, Jess." I informed her as my eyes darted back and forth, looking for where the smell came from.
"Really? What does it smell like?" Jesse asked, taking my hands in hers, while waiting for an answer from a distraught me.
"Cedarwood and mint!"
"Oh my gosh! That definitely sounds like something that would smell heavenly!" She squealed.
Whatever she said was drowned out in my own thoughts. All I wanted was to see who owned that distinctive smell, but it wasn't happening. I knew the person was a student of this school as well, since the smell was so close by.
I waited and waited, and just like that, the cafeteria doors burst open, revealing Lucas Maverick, Alpha's son. My eyes widened in surprise as I watched his every movement.
I could tell he was looking for someone as well, because when his eyes found mine, he was surprised before masking it up with a stoic expression.
"Mate!" A voice said in my head. It didn't come from me. I know what I sounded like and that it didn't sound like me at all.
Every hair in my body stood up as I watched him walk toward me. I peeled my eyes away from him for a second and was amazed to see what was happening… Everybody was watching Lucas heading in my direction. I'm probably sure that they were wondering what I had done this time.
But I didn't care. I was excited. I had found my mate, and he was the Alpha's son. Was I just lucky or what?!!
"You… Come with me!" Lucas said, using his Alpha tone which came out as a command. Was this supposed to happen? Wasn't he supposed to be all loved up? Why was he acting this way?
"Ahh!!" I yelped out as a strong hand dragged me away from the balcony to the rooftop of the school's building before letting me go.
While he held my hands, electric sparks shot up my body, almost making it numb, and when he left it, it suddenly missed the feeling of being touched.
"You're my mate?!" Lucas yelled, veins popping out of his forehead. I was caught off guard. Why was he asking me such a question as though he didn't know what the answer was?
"Is that a bad thing? You say that like it's a bad thing, which it isn't. We've been fated by the Moon Goddess, so why are you acting this way?" I questioned. This wasn't the fairytale I was expecting. No. This turned out to be a nightmare.
"You will never be my mate. I can't be mates with someone who doesn't have any ranking, someone who isn't attractive and someone who doesn't have the slightest idea about what being a Luna means!" Lucas growled, making me take steps backwards as his eyes burned with hatred.
"But… " Somehow, deep in my guts, I knew where this was going. I had only heard rumors about it but never believed them to be true. Lucas Maverick was going to reject me, his fated mate.
Even though it was a crazy thing to do, I couldn't let him have the last laugh, not in this situation.
"I…" he began saying, but I beat him to it.
"I, Ari Lumina Parker, reject you, Lucas Maverick, as my mate. Standing under the guidance of the Moon Goddess, I reject the mate bond, and everything that binds us together."
