The map lay open across Elias's bed.
Moonlight spilled through his bedroom window, tracing the faded ink lines that wound through Blackridge before disappearing into the dense trees of Ravenwood Forest.
At the bottom of the page, the words haunted him.
Meeting Place – Midnight.
He checked the clock.
11:08 p.m.
Less than an hour.
His parents had finally fallen asleep after their argument. The house was silent, but Elias couldn't stop thinking about what he'd overheard.
The Society never leaves loose ends.
Who were they?
A club? A secret organization? Or just a name people whispered when they were afraid?
His phone buzzed.
Maya: Are we really doing this?
Elias typed back.
Elias:Yes.
Almost immediately another message appeared.
Caleb: I'm outside.
Elias slipped the two silver keys into his pocket, tucked Captain Hayes's journal into his backpack, and quietly climbed out his bedroom window.
For the first time in years, he wasn't running from the truth.
He was running toward it.
---
The streets of Blackridge were deserted.
A cool wind carried the scent of pine and damp earth as the three friends walked toward the forest.
Maya pulled her jacket tighter.
"I have a bad feeling about this."
Caleb tried to smile.
"You've had a bad feeling since we found the first key."
"Exactly."
Elias unfolded the map again under a streetlamp.
"We're close."
None of them noticed the pair of headlights parked half a block away.
The driver watched silently as they disappeared into the trees.
---
Ravenwood Forest felt different at night.
The branches swayed gently overhead, blocking out most of the moonlight.
Every snap of a twig sounded louder than it should.
Every shadow seemed alive.
Caleb glanced over his shoulder.
"Do you guys hear that?"
"Hear what?" Maya whispered.
"Footsteps."
The three stopped walking.
Silence.
Only the wind.
Then—
Crunch.
Someone else was in the forest.
Elias switched off his flashlight.
"Hide."
They ducked behind a cluster of thick bushes as a figure carrying a lantern walked along the trail.
Not the hooded stranger.
An older man.
Dressed in a long black coat.
He passed within a few meters of them without looking their way.
When he disappeared into the darkness, Elias slowly stood.
"He went toward the meeting place."
"Then so are we," Maya said.
---
Ten minutes later, the trees opened into a small clearing.
In the center stood an abandoned stone chapel.
Its roof had partially collapsed years ago, but the walls still stood.
Moonlight poured through the broken windows.
Around the chapel were at least a dozen people.
All dressed in dark clothing.
Most wore simple white masks that hid their faces.
Elias's heart pounded.
"This is real," Caleb whispered.
"They actually exist."
Maya grabbed Elias's arm.
"We should leave."
But he couldn't.
Not now.
Not when the answers were finally within reach.
---
The masked figures formed a circle inside the ruined chapel.
One of them stepped forward.
Unlike the others, this person wore no mask.
Only a long dark coat.
The moon illuminated silver hair and a weathered face.
His voice carried through the clearing.
"For ten years..."
he began,
"...our silence has protected this town."
The others nodded.
"We gather tonight because the past has awakened."
Elias instinctively touched the key in his pocket.
"The first key has been found."
A murmur spread through the group.
"So has the second."
Maya's eyes widened.
"They know."
The man continued.
"If the third key is discovered..."
His expression hardened.
"...everything ends."
---
Third key?
Elias exchanged a quick glance with Caleb.
There were more.
The silver-haired man held up a folded piece of paper.
"It is time."
He unfolded it.
Even from a distance, Elias recognized the photograph.
It was the same family picture someone had left at his door.
Only this copy had something written across it in red ink.
The man looked around the circle.
"The Rowan boy has begun asking questions."
Silence.
"He cannot reach the final truth."
One of the masked figures spoke.
"What if he already knows?"
"He doesn't."
"And if he refuses to stop?"
The silver-haired man's answer was calm.
"Then we stop him."
A chill raced down Elias's spine.
---
Suddenly—
CRACK!
A branch snapped beneath Caleb's foot.
Every head turned toward the trees.
"Who's there?" one of the masked people shouted.
Run.
Elias didn't wait.
He grabbed Maya's hand.
"Go!"
The three friends sprinted through the forest.
Voices erupted behind them.
"After them!"
Flashlights burst to life among the trees.
"They're coming!" Caleb yelled.
Branches whipped across Elias's face as they raced downhill.
His lungs burned.
His heartbeat thundered in his ears.
Someone was gaining on them.
---
Without warning, Maya cried out.
She stumbled, twisting her ankle.
"Elias!"
He stopped instantly.
"Leave me!"
"I'm not leaving you."
He pulled her back to her feet.
Caleb looked behind them.
"They're almost here!"
Footsteps echoed through the darkness.
Closer.
Closer.
Then—
A sharp whistle cut through the night.
Everything stopped.
The masked figures froze.
One by one...
They backed away.
Not because of Elias.
Because of someone else.
A single hooded figure stepped onto the trail.
The same stranger with the scar across the left side of their face.
The stranger stood between Elias and the masked group.
Without speaking a word.
The silver-haired man stared at the hooded stranger.
"So..."
he said quietly.
"You've finally chosen a side."
The hooded stranger didn't answer.
Instead, they slowly drew a small object from their coat.
It gleamed in the moonlight.
Another silver key.
The third one.
Engraved with a single word.
TRUST.
The masked figures hesitated.
Then, unexpectedly, they turned and disappeared into the forest.
Within seconds, the clearing was silent again.
Only Elias, Maya, Caleb... and the mysterious stranger remained.
The hooded figure looked directly at Elias.
Their voice was low and steady.
"If you want the truth about the fire..."
they said,
"...you must stop looking for who started it."
Elias frowned.
"What do you mean?"
The stranger's eyes filled with sadness.
"Ask instead..."
They placed the third key in Elias's hand.
"...who was meant to die."
Before Elias could ask another question, the hooded figure vanished into the darkness of Ravenwood Forest.
The three friends stood frozen.
Three keys now rested in Elias's hand.
Remember.
Forgive.
Trust.
And one impossible question echoed through his mind:
If Lily wasn't the intended victim... then who was?
