The drive home from Ashwood Station was almost silent.
Rain tapped softly against the windows of Caleb's old pickup truck.
No one spoke.
Thomas Hawthorne's journal rested on Elias's lap.
It felt heavier than it should have, as though it carried not just paper and ink, but years of unanswered questions.
Finally, Maya broke the silence.
"That person at the station... do you think they followed us?"
Elias stared out the window.
"I think they were waiting for us."
Caleb tightened his grip on the steering wheel.
"Then they knew we'd find Locker 17."
"Or they wanted us to."
The thought sent a chill through all three of them.
---
That evening, the friends gathered in the attic of Elias's small cottage.
The rain had grown heavier, drumming against the roof.
An old lantern cast warm light across the journal.
Elias carefully turned another page.
His father's handwriting was steady.
> If this journal reaches you, then the people behind the fire are still hiding in Raven's Hollow. William Grayson was never the only one responsible. He was only the face everyone knew.
Caleb looked up sharply.
"There are more of them."
Maya nodded slowly.
"An entire group."
Elias turned the page again.
A loose piece of paper slipped onto the floor.
It was an old map of Raven's Hollow.
One place had been circled in dark red ink.
The Forest of Forgotten Promises.
Beneath the map, Thomas had written:
> 'The truth sleeps beneath the oldest oak.'
"The oldest oak?" Caleb asked.
"That's in Blackwood Forest," Maya replied quietly.
"My grandfather used to tell stories about it."
"What kind of stories?"
She hesitated.
"He said people who entered the forest searching for treasure never returned the same."
Caleb gave a nervous laugh.
"That's probably just an old legend."
But no one else laughed.
---
The next morning, they packed flashlights, ropes, water, and the journal.
Mist drifted between the towering pine trees as they entered Blackwood Forest.
The deeper they walked, the quieter the world became.
Even the birds seemed afraid to sing.
After nearly an hour, Maya stopped.
"There."
At the top of a hill stood the largest oak tree any of them had ever seen.
Its enormous branches stretched across the sky like giant arms.
Its roots twisted through the earth like ancient stone.
"This has to be it," Elias whispered.
They searched around the tree.
Nothing.
Caleb kicked at a loose rock.
"I'm starting to think your dad meant something symbolic."
Just then, Maya noticed a strange carving on the trunk.
A raven.
Exactly the same symbol from the letter.
"Elias..."
He ran his hand across the carving.
Something clicked.
The ground beneath the tree shifted.
With a deep rumble, part of the earth slowly sank, revealing a narrow stone staircase descending into darkness.
None of them moved.
Caleb swallowed hard.
"I was hoping we'd find a box."
Maya managed a weak smile.
"Instead we found a doorway."
Elias switched on his flashlight.
His father's words echoed in his mind.
"The truth sleeps beneath the oldest oak."
He looked at his friends.
"We've come too far to turn back."
Together, they stepped onto the ancient staircase.
The stone door slowly closed behind them with a heavy thud.
The only light now came from their flashlights.
Deep beneath Raven's Hollow...
they had entered a place no one had seen for generations.
And somewhere in the darkness ahead...
someone was waiting.
