“Next spring fall, I got second in the race.
Strange, isn’t it?
I trained harder than anyone, but the girl beside me still won.
So I pushed her into the pool afterward.
As she drowned, I went back to studying.”
---
The campus was buzzing that morning—sunlight glinting off the golden railings Academy. Students filled the track field, ready for the annual Spring-Fall Race.
Eun Rin stood at the starting line, her expression blank as always.
Beside her, Ha Yena adjusted her ponytail with a soft smile.
“Good luck, Eun Rin,” Yena said.
Eun Rin didn’t reply.
The gunshot fired.
Yena flew forward like she had wings.
Eun Rin paced herself—calculating, precise, perfect.
But Yena still crossed the finish line first.
Cheers exploded.
Ms. Sooyeon hugged Yena.
Students surrounded her.
Eun Rin simply blinked once, expression unmoving.

Later — Pool Area
“No hard feelings, right?” Yena said gently, stepping toward the pool edge.
Eun Rin tilted her head.
“None.”
Then, with the coldness of a winter night, she placed her hand on Yena’s shoulder—
And pushed.
The splash echoed through the empty indoor pool.
Yena flailed.
Screamed.
Begged.
Eun Rin sat on a bench, opening her textbook.
Flip.
Flip.
Flip.
Her eyes didn’t leave the page.

The Two Boys Arrive
Kang Rovan stepped into the pool room first.
His eyes burned with dark amusement.
“You really did it, princess.”
He walked to the security panel.
Pulled out a chip.
Wiped everything.
“Clean. Like it never happened.”
Behind him, Seo Jihan froze in horror as he saw Yena being pulled out by teachers.
“Rin… Rin, what did you do!?” he shouted.
Eun Rin looked up from her book.
“Studying.”
“That’s not what I mean!” Jihan grabbed her shoulders.
“You killed someone. This isn’t you. Please—please tell me what’s going on. Confess. I can help you—just tell the truth!”
Eun Rin blinked once.
“There is no truth.”
Her voice was flat, emotionless.
Jihan’s breath trembled.
His eyes glistened, breaking.
“You’re not a monster,” he whispered. “I know you. I grew up with you. Mi Rae—don’t let this consume you.”
Rovan’s jaw tightened.
“That name is dead,” he said, yanking her arm away from Jihan.
“Don’t touch her.”
Jihan stepped back.
His hands shook.
“You’ll regret this, Rin…” he whispered.
Then he turned—
and walked away, defeated, disgusted, devastated.
Rovan watched him leave with a dark smirk.
“Let him run. He doesn’t understand you.”
He helped Eun Rin to her feet.
“You and I,” Rovan murmured softly,
“we’re made of the same shadow.”
Eun Rin closed her book.
“Let’s go.”
And together, they walked out of the pool room—
as the alarms began to ring behind them.

"Water shows you the truth. Because it reflects what the world refuses to see."
She told me I was “trying too hard.”
That I would always be second.
She shouldn’t have said that near the deep end.
People drown quietly.
Just like they freeze quietly.
Just like they fall quietly.
Funny how life repeats itself.
