PROLOGUE
His arresting ice blue eyes had been fixated on the young woman since the moment she walked up to the witness stand. There was no expression on his face to give away his thoughts but there was something about his glacial stare that didn't waver for even a second that made her feel nervous. He could see it in the way she sat stiffly and tried to avoid his gaze. She was small- petite, with large brown eyes and the softest looking pink bow-shaped lips. Her dark hair was pulled up in a tight formal bun and she wore brown slacks with a black jersey over her top.
Most people would say she was plain. Nothing like the confident, leggy, red stained lipped women he was used to. Oh but she was perhaps confident in her own way. How else could she have grown the courage to face a bad man like himself? He casually rested his elbow on the wooden rail of the accused box and put a finger to his temple and lightly rubbed against it out of habit. From what he knew, she was an intern at the firm where Marcus Russo had gone to find a lawyer who would help him sue Vitale. She was striving to be a lawyer herself. Perhaps she could be his lawyer one day.
He nearly smiled when he noticed her squirm. She could feel his eyes on her.
"Miss Andrews what were you doing at the office at that time?" the state attorney questioned her.
"I had received a text from Mr. Samuels that said Mr. Vitale had planned an unannounced visit to his office to resolve the matter between him and Mr. Russo without the involvement of the court. He said that he needed me to be at the office to make sure that everything had gone smoothly and to call the cops if I sensed anything amiss and if not there might have been formalities I needed to type out."
"So Mr. Samuels suspected that something could go wrong?"
"Yes."
"Do you still have the text Miss. Andrews?"
"I do," she took out her phone and quickly surfed through it to find the message before handing it over to the attorney.
The middle-aged attorney read over the message briefly and then passed it on to the judge.
"Tell us what you saw when you got there Miss. Andrews."
"I got there a little earlier than Mr. Samuels instructed. The office was empty at the time. I walked to Mr. Samuels' chambers and heard calm voices from inside so I thought that they were still busy in their meeting. I sat at my desk outside his office and occupied myself with some work when suddenly the room went silent followed by... gunshots..."
"What did you do when you heard the gun shots go off?"
"I wasn't sure if I could run out of there without getting seen so I decided to hide under my table instead. I saw Mr. Vitale and two of his men come out of the room soon after. Mr. Vitale stopped in the doorway and fired two shots again before leaving..."
Such a shame that he hadn't found the little topolina at that time. They could have avoided this whole ordeal.
"You saw Mr. Vitale fire?"
"Yes. Yes I did." She confirmed seriously.
"Thank you Miss Andrews. That will be all, you may go back to your seat," he nodded at her, "Well there you have it Your Honour. This proves that Mr. Vitale Marchetti was in fact at Mr. Samuels office under the guise of resolving his issue with Mr. Russo. He had chosen that time because he believed that no one else would be there after office hours to see him commit his heinous crimes. "
Vitale still watched the curious woman as she walked back to her seat. He was mesmerized by her presence, her grace and the way she carried herself. He ached to have her look at him once. Even if it were in disgust or hate. No naked woman had ever managed to bring such a reaction from him as this drab and prudish young girl had. He was so immersed in his thoughts that he missed most of the proceedings that followed. He nearly even missed his judgement being handed down.
"Taking all the evidence into account the court finds Vitale Marchetti to be guilty of two counts of second degree murder and sentences him to 25 years to life..."
The silence in court was broken by chatter from the audience and questions by the press. Vitale was unbothered by it all. The only thing on his mind was that the topolina had yet to cast him a glance and she was leaving. His fist clenched in restrained anger. How dare she-
But then she stopped suddenly and slowly turned around. Their eyes met for the first time. His breath caught when she glared at him bravely with fire in those molten brown orbs. He in return smiled a rare smile that she may or may not have even caught because she turned on her heel and walked out of the court room in a rush.
A sense of excitement filled him from the whole experience. The mere meeting of their eyes made his blood heat up. Oh he wanted her... he wanted her beside him, under him, without clothes, crying out his name. He knew he wouldn't be serving even half the time of his sentence but he still needed his lawyers to speed up the process. The sooner he got out, the sooner he could deliver a delicious and excruciatingly long punishment to his topolina.
