Chapter 9 Outside the Building

It happened because of the rain. Velmoor City had been threatening it all week — that particular grey, loaded quality to the sky that meant business, the kind of weather that made the city feel smaller and closer and slightly more honest than it did in the sun. I'd ignored the forecast because I always ignored the forecast, which was a personal failing I had long since accepted about myself. So on Thursday evening, at six fifty-five, I walked out of the building into a wall of rain so complete and so immediate that I was soaked from the shoulders down before I'd made it to the edge of the awning. I stood there with my bag over my head — which was doing nothing — and looked at the street, which had transformed in the thirty minutes since I'd last looked out a window into something that resembled a river system more than a road. The bus stop was fifty metres away. The train station was four minutes' walk in normal conditions, which meant approximately fourteen minutes in this, which meant I would arrive at the platform looking like I'd been fished out of something. "You forgot your umbrella." I turned. Roman Kade was standing two feet behind me, beneath the awning, coat on, the particular quality of dry that suggested he'd been watching the rain for slightly longer than I had and had made his calculations accordingly. He was not holding an umbrella. He was holding two — his own, and one I recognised as the compact fold-up that had been sitting in the lost-and-found basket at the forty-three reception desk for the past two weeks. He held it out. I looked at it. Then at him. "That's from the lost-and-found." "It's been there for fourteen days. I think we can assume ownership has been relinquished." "You've been counting the days it's been in the lost-and-found?" Something that might — under different lighting and with generous interpretation — have been the beginning of amusement moved across his face. "I noticed it when I walked past. I have a functional memory." I took the umbrella. "Thank you," I said. "Don't thank me. It isn't mine to give." We stood there for a moment, both looking at the rain, which showed no indication of reconsidering. "The car?" I said. "Mr. Pete is in Eastside. A function. He won't be back for two hours." He said it without inflection, simply as information. "I was going to walk." I looked at him. "Walk. In this." "It's water." "It's a flood system." The almost-amusement again. It was becoming — I noticed this with the part of my brain that catalogued things about Roman Kade against my better judgement — more frequent. Not more visible, exactly. Just less suppressed. Like a frequency gradually increasing in a quiet room. "There's a place," he said. "Seven minutes from here. I know the owner. We could wait it out." I should have said no. I had a train to catch, a mother to call, a sketchbook at home with seventeen unfinished ideas in it. I was already forming the polite professional decline in my head — the one that maintained appropriate distance and reminded us both that we were employer and employee and that standing in the rain together was already more than the situation required. "Okay," I said instead. We opened our umbrellas and walked into the rain. * * * The place was called Michael's. It was small — eight tables, low lighting, the kind of warmth that hit you in the face when you opened the door and felt entirely intentional. The smell of it reached me before we were fully inside: groundnut soup, frying plantain, something with ginger that I couldn't immediately identify but that my body responded to with the specific, cellular recognition of comfort food. The man behind the counter — sixties, broad, with the face of someone who had seen everything and found most of it funny — looked up when we came in and his expression went through several things in rapid succession. Surprise. Pleasure. Then a long, evaluating look at me that I felt in my sternum. "Roman," he said. "Michael." Roman shook his hand with the ease of real familiarity — not the performed ease of business, but the kind built from years of actual time in the same room. "This is Aria Wells. She works on the project." "Aria Wells," Michael repeated, as if testing the weight of it. "Sit anywhere. I'll bring something." We sat at a table near the window — rain running down the glass, the street outside gone impressionistic. Roman took off his coat. I unwound my scarf. We arranged ourselves across from each other with the slight careful quality of two people who had never sat across from each other outside the formal geometry of an office and were both very aware of it. I looked at the menu. Then I looked at Roman, who was not looking at the menu. "You always know what you want," I said. "Usually." "Does that apply to everything or just food?" He looked at me. The question had come out slightly more pointed than I'd intended it to, which I noticed in the half-second after saying it and decided not to apologise for. "Most things," he said. "Not everything." I went back to the menu. Michael brought things without being asked — small dishes, the kind that arrived incrementally and suggested you were expected to stay a while. Plantain, crisp-edged and perfect. A bowl of something with chicken and spinach that smelled extraordinary. Chin-chin in a small basket. A bottle of cold water and, without comment, a bottle of palm wine that he set between us and then walked away from. "You come here often," I said. "Since I was twelve." He poured the palm wine into two small cups and slid one toward me without asking. "My mother lived three streets over. When she was well, she cooked everything herself. When she wasn't —" He stopped. A brief pause, the kind that had a specific shape. "Michael fed us." I wrapped my hands around the cup. "You and Ethan." "Mostly me. Ethan was at school in the north. Boarding." He said it without resentment, just as a fact. But I was learning to hear what Roman didn't say, which was sometimes more than what he did. "I was here." "You stayed to be near her." He looked at me. Something in the look said: yes. Something else in it said: that is more than I usually tell people. Both things were visible at the same time, which I thought might be the palm wine, or the rain, or the specific displaced honesty of being somewhere that wasn't the building. "She would have liked the cutting garden," he said quietly. I felt the words land somewhere deep and tender. "I know," I said. Which was presumptuous — I'd never met her, knew almost nothing about her beyond what these small fragments had given me. But I said it anyway because it felt true, and because Roman Kade deserved, occasionally, to have someone simply agree with him about his mother. He looked at the window. The rain was still going, streaming down the glass in long unbroken lines. "Ethan doesn't know," he said. I went still. "About the garden?" "About any of it. The market, the flower stall, the —" He stopped again. Turned his cup in his hands, a gesture I recognised from Marcus — the physical manifestation of choosing words. "Ethan and I. We work well together. We always have. He's the part of the business that faces outward, I'm the part that — " A pause. "He doesn't ask about the thinking behind things. He trusts the result." I thought about what Marcus had said: Ethan's name on the press releases, Roman's vision underneath. I thought about the building — that extraordinary, meticulous building — and the man who had grown up three streets from where it stood and had put his mother's Saturday mornings into the rooftop without anyone knowing. "Does that bother you?" I asked. "That he doesn't ask." Roman considered this with the seriousness he gave to everything. "It used to," he said. "Less now." "Why less now?" He looked at me. There was a long moment in which the rain ran down the glass and the restaurant made its warm, quiet sounds around us and Roman Kade looked at me across a small table with an expression I had no precedent for — not the assessment, not the professional attention, not the careful management of distance. Something more unguarded than any of those things. Something that, if I had to name it, I might have called: seen. "Someone asked," he said. The words were quiet and simple and sat on the table between us with a weight entirely disproportionate to their size. I looked at my palm wine. I looked at the rain. I looked at the plantain, which was getting cold, and I picked up a piece and ate it because it was something to do with my hands and my face and the fact that I was sitting across from Roman Kade in a small warm restaurant while he told me things he didn't tell people and I was rapidly running out of arguments for why this was manageable. "The lobby presentation is next Friday," I said. He accepted the pivot without comment — smoothly, the way he accepted most things, absorbing the change in direction without resistance. "Are you ready?" "Nearly. I want one more walk-through of the space before I finalise the boards." "Saturday morning," he said. "The site is quiet. I can meet you at eight." I looked up. "You don't need to —" "I know the space better than anyone. I can answer questions on the structural side that Marcus might not have the history for." He said it practically, as if the offer were entirely logistical. As if we had not just spent twenty minutes talking about his mother and a flower stall and what it felt like to have someone ask. "Eight o'clock Saturday," I said. "Eight o'clock." The rain began to ease. We both noticed it at the same time — the change in pressure, the softening of the sound against the window. Neither of us moved immediately. We sat in the warm remainder of the meal and the comfortable wreckage of a conversation that had gone further than intended and looked at the clearing rain. Michael appeared with the bill. Roman took it. I reached for my bag and he said, without looking up, "Don't." "I can pay for —" "I know you can." He looked up then. "Let me." I let him. We walked out into the washed, clean-smelling street and stood under the awning while the last of the rain finished itself off. The city had the bright, particular quality it got after heavy rain — everything rinsed, the lights reflected in the wet road, the air tasting of something close to new. "Thank you," I said. "For the umbrella. And the food." "The umbrella wasn't mine," he said. "For the food, then." He nodded once. Mr. Pete had texted — the function had ended early, the car was ten minutes away. "Saturday," he said. "Saturday," I agreed. We walked in opposite directions. I made it half a block before I realised I was smiling and made myself stop and kept walking with my recovered umbrella and my damp shoulders and the warm, full feeling of a meal eaten in good company, and I told myself — firmly, practically, with everything I had — that this was a work dinner that had happened by accident. I almost believed it all the way home. Almost.
