The call came on a Friday afternoon.
I was on the eighth floor terrace with Marcus, measuring sight lines for the corridor connection I'd proposed, when my phone buzzed in my pocket. I ignored it the first time. The second time I pulled it out and glanced at the screen.
Kofi.
My brother never called during school hours. The rule between us was ironclad — texts only until three-thirty, calls only for emergencies. I'd established it when he was twelve and I was eighteen and already working two part-time jobs, and he had understood it with the serious, slightly-too-old gravity of a child who had learned early that his sister's time cost something.
He was seventeen now and he still followed the rule.
I held up a finger to Marcus. "One second."
I stepped to the far end of the terrace and answered.
"Kofi. What happened."
"It's Mum." His voice was steady — my brother had our mother's quality of staying level when things went sideways, the kind of calm that came from having practised it too many times. "She collapsed at home about an hour ago. I called the ambulance. We're at Velmoor General."
The terrace railing was cold under my hand. Forty-three floors below, the city moved.
"How bad," I said.
"The doctor hasn't come out yet. She was conscious when they brought her in. She kept telling me to call you and I kept telling her I would and she kept telling me anyway." A pause. "She's okay, Aria. I think she's okay."
"I'm coming." I was already turning back toward Marcus, already calculating — forty minutes by train, faster by cab if I could get one, I had forty-two thousand naira in my account which was not nothing but was not comfortable either and a cab across the city was — "I'll be there in forty minutes."
"You don't have to —"
"Kofi."
"Okay," he said. "Okay. I'll be here."
I hung up and looked at Marcus. He was watching me with the expression of a man who had heard enough of one side of a conversation to understand the shape of it.
"Go," he said, before I could speak.
"The measurements —"
"Can wait until Monday. Go."
I went.

I didn't take the stairs. I took the elevator, watching the floor numbers drop, running the calculations that I always ran when something happened — the cold, practical arithmetic of what things cost and what I had and what the gap between those two numbers meant.
My mother's treatment was managed, mostly. The hospital had a payment plan. The plan was manageable as long as I was employed and the plan didn't change and nothing unexpected happened.
Things had now unexpectedly happened.
I stepped out of the elevator into the lobby — the raw, unfinished space that I'd been sketching and measuring and dreaming about for a week — and nearly walked directly into Roman Kade.
He was coming from the site entrance, hard hat in hand, and he stopped when he saw me the same way I stopped when I saw him — that mutual split-second recalibration that happened when you encountered someone in a context where you didn't expect them.
I was in my coat already, bag over my shoulder. He looked at my face and whatever he saw there made something shift behind his eyes.
"Ms. Wells."
"I have a family emergency," I said. "I've cleared it with Marcus. I'll make up the time."
I moved to go around him.
"Do you need a car?"
I stopped.
He was standing exactly where he'd been, hard hat still in hand, expression as composed as always. But the question hung in the unfinished lobby air between us like something solid.
"I'm sorry?" I said.
"A car. My driver is downstairs." He said it the way he said most things — not as an offer, not as a kindness, just as a fact being presented for consideration. "If you need to get somewhere quickly."
I looked at him. I was aware, in a distant way, of the arithmetic still running in the back of my head — the cost of a cab, the forty-minute train, my mother on a hospital bed somewhere being told things by a doctor I hadn't spoken to yet.
"That's — " I started. Stopped. I was not good at accepting things. I had spent most of my life making sure I didn't have to. "Yes," I said, instead of what I usually said. "Thank you."
He nodded once and pulled out his phone.

The car was a black sedan, clean and quiet, with a driver named Mr. Pete who clearly knew better than to ask questions. I sat in the back and watched Velmoor City move past the windows and held my bag in my lap with both hands and tried to keep the arithmetic from becoming panic.
My phone buzzed. A text from a number I didn't recognise.
*Tell the driver where you need to go. He knows the city. — R*
I stared at it for a moment. Then I leaned forward and gave Mr. Pete the hospital address, and he nodded and adjusted the route, and I sat back and breathed.
It took twenty-two minutes.

My mother was fine.
That was the first thing the doctor told me, and I had to stand in the corridor and breathe through it for a second before the rest of the words landed. Low blood pressure, possibly exacerbated by the medication adjustment they'd made three weeks ago. They wanted to keep her overnight for observation, run a few additional tests in the morning, adjust the dosage if necessary.
Fine. She was fine.
I found Kofi in the waiting room — tall, lanky, wearing the school uniform he'd clearly been in all day, tie loosened, sitting very straight in the plastic chair the way he did when he was pretending not to be scared. He stood when he saw me and I hugged him before he could say anything because he was seventeen and he'd called the ambulance alone and sat in a waiting room alone for over an hour and he deserved a hug whether he thought he needed one or not.
"She's okay," I said into his shoulder, because he was already taller than me and that was still slightly absurd.
"I know," he said. "They told me."
"Then why do you look like that?"
He pulled back and looked at me with our mother's eyes — deep and steady and capable of seeing things you'd rather they didn't. "Because you weren't here yet," he said simply.
I didn't have an answer for that. I squeezed his arm instead.
We sat with our mother for an hour. She was in a bed in the observation ward, small and slightly annoyed about the whole situation, which I found deeply reassuring. She held my hand and told me I looked tired and asked if I was eating properly, and I told her I was fine and she gave me the three-question-mark look she usually reserved for text messages, and Kofi laughed, and something in my chest unknotted itself one careful loop at a time.
I stayed until eight. Kofi took the train home — I watched him go from the hospital entrance, stood there until I couldn't see him anymore, then turned and found Mr. Pete parked at the kerb exactly where he'd been that morning.
I stopped walking.
"I didn't — " I started. "You've been here the whole time?"
Mr. Pete smiled with the calm of a man who had clearly been given very specific instructions. "Mr. Kade said to wait."
I stood on the kerb outside Velmoor General at eight-fifteen on a Friday night and looked at the car and felt something I didn't entirely know what to do with. Something that sat underneath gratitude and alongside discomfort and had no clean name.
I got in the car.

I texted the unknown number on the way home.
*She's okay. Thank you for the car.*
The reply came three minutes later.
*Good.*
One word. Typically Roman — no excess, nothing wasted, the whole transaction apparently complete as far as he was concerned.
I looked at the word for longer than I should have.
Then I put my phone face-down on the seat and looked out the window instead, at the city going about its Friday night with all its brightness and noise, and I told myself, very firmly, that Roman Kade had done a practical thing because he had a practical mind and it cost him nothing and that was all it was.
It was a good argument.
I almost believed it.

He was already at his desk when I arrived Monday morning — I could see the light under his office door from the elevator. I went to my desk, made coffee from the new machine that nobody had explained the origin of but everybody appreciated, and sat down.
At nine o'clock precisely, the door at the end of the executive corridor opened and Roman walked out. He crossed the floor to the printer, collected something, and turned to go back.
He paused when he passed my desk.
He didn't say good morning. He didn't say anything about Friday. He looked at my desk — the new sketches I'd spread out, the fabric samples Marcus had sent over, the small framed photograph I'd brought from home that sat in the corner of my monitor. My mother and Kofi and me at the beach three summers ago, my mother laughing at something off-camera, Kofi squinting at the sun, me with my arm around both of them looking like the luckiest person in the world.
He looked at it for exactly two seconds.
Then he said, "The fabricator called. The bronze panels are feasible at the scale you specified. Lead time is ten weeks." He held out the paper he'd collected from the printer — a quotation, I realised. Detailed line items, materials costs, installation fees, the whole thing.
I took it.
"Thank you," I said.
He nodded once and went back to his office.
I looked at the quotation. Then I looked at the closed door at the end of the corridor.
Then I looked at the photograph of my mother laughing at the beach, and I thought about a man who had sent a car to wait outside a hospital for three hours for a woman he'd known for less than two weeks and then said good as if it were nothing.
I thought: this is going to be a problem.
And I went back to work.
