9 The ocean journey from Fremantle to the colony of Melbourne was as predicted. Apart from a few uncomfortable days during which the Sylphide developed an unnerving corkscrew motion as she charged eastward, the result of strong westerly winds and the Southern Ocean’s persistent south westerly swells, near perfect sailing conditions and minimal discomfort for both man and beast otherwise prevailed.
