28 Scone was not short of quality horses… nor of rogues who cried poor when negotiating prices. However, after riding several horses and making their selections, Harry and Patrick felt vindicated that the asking prices were equine bargains: Walers, the owner called them. All were three years old, strong, responsive, highly intelligent, eager to work, companionable and above all else, easy to ride. In Scone, before returning home the men not only purchased new saddles, halters, and bridles, but cold weather coats for each horse. They even lashed out and purchased a new saddlebag, agreeing that it was time to discard its predecessor, just in case someone ever recognised it. On the way back to their farm, Harry and Patrick called in to collect the neighbour’s children. They were overjoyed
