Chapter 10The next Christmas was much like the previous one. Rachel, Edith, Henry, Wesley, Jeffery and his family, and I gathered for the holidays. This year, though, Henry hadn’t shot an elk, much to Shayla’s delight. She was just at that age that she worried about the environment and the lives of animals. Edith had cooked two twenty-pound turkeys and a ham, with all the trimmings. There were, of course, mashed potatoes and gravy, but this year we had corn and acorn squash with maple syrup. The desserts were much the same with the addition of a cherry cobbler, with cherries Edith had canned the past summer. Rachel and I had bought everyone presents on our trip to Hong Kong. Rachel’s were outrageously expensive, even for Hong Kong, but mine were more thoughtful. I knew I couldn’t compete
