Alex's POV
Duke Drago introduced his son Damian to my parents. And then everyone sat down at the table. I stayed standing.
There was something strange in the eyes of the young Duke Damian Cresent. He glared, especially at Liam, who had not yet spoken. Achilles, my wolf tried unsuccessfully to reach Marcus, Liam's wolf.
Lady Alexia and I set out all the facts we knew about Lydia's disappearance.
We soon worked out a rescue plan. Unfortunately, Lady Alexia will have to be the bait to lure Theodore in order for us to reach Lydia successfully.
Lady Alexia explained to me that once we were in the same territory I would be able to communicate with Lydia. And she will show me how to find her.
My friend Damir will allow us to pass through his territory when we enter Slovenia.
An hour later the plan was worked out in detail and our warriors were ready to go.
"Alex", my father said, "I believe in you son, I believe you will be able to save your mate and to bring a pack their Luna. But you understand that if something goes wrong, the pack must not be left unprotected. So I decided that while you were leading your trackers, I would lead Liam's warriors. He has to stay here and take care of the pack if we don't come back."
"No!" Lady Alexis shouted. "Both of your sons must go and save my daughter. Otherwise we will all die in Theodore's hands."
"Look, Lady Alexia. I understand you, but you have to understand me too, I can't leave the pack unprotected." My father said.
"It will not be unprotected if you are there."
"Yeah, so you want me to leave the pack without my future alpha. Isn't it enough that I send one son to certain death now that I have to send another."
"It is very important that they are both there, how you don't understand. I have never met such a stubborn wolf in my life."
"Liam, you have nothing to say."
"Yes Liam, are you going to say something." Damian asked. "You piece of s**t. I should kill you right now for what you did to my sister."
"What are you talking about? Why on earth does your son threaten my son."
"Let him tell you himself, if he has the courage." Damian said.
There is something in his voice. If just one look can kill, I'm sure Damian would kill Liam now. Now everything was starting to become clear to me. I gripped Lydia's scarf tightly and approached Liam, who was still silent.
"Tell me exactly what you smell? Tell me what scent do you smell? Liam, don't test my patience."
"Alex, what the hell are you doing? Why would Liam smell anything?"
"Because Dad Lydia should be his mate too." I said.
"How is it possible?" My father asked quietly, slumping back in his chair.
"Tell me!" I pounded my fist on the table.
"Nothing!" Liam shouted, speaking for the first time. "I don't feel anything. Just the usual witch smell."
"How? Tell me!"
"I screwed up. And I don't even remember how I screwed things up."
I heard regret and despair in his voice, but at this point I didn’t care.
"You have no idea how much I want to break your bones now."
"You can do what you want to me, it won't change the fact that I screwed things up with our mate."
"Never again did it occur to you to call her our mate. She's my mate. Only mine. You disrespected our bond. You disrespected our mate. You lost the right to call her yours. And you lost my respect and trust."
"Alex please let me explain."
"Lady Alexia, I'll wait for you at the car, Simon, come with me to gather the warriors. I have a mate I need to save."
Having said that, I headed for the door and left the office furious at Liam. And even more so because I didn't stop our mate from getting hurt.
The last thing I heard was a slap in the face on someone's cheek, it's not hard to guess whose. And my mother as she says: "Liam Lazarus Kostov I am ashamed of you."
I was ashamed of myself, how could I allow my beloved to suffer. But an even better question was, how come I didn’t feel it when Liam tore our bond apart.
Liam's POV
I was so ashamed, I couldn't look Alex in the eyes when he came over and handed me Lydia's scarf to smell. I screwed things up with my mate, even before I met her. I knew that, but I didn't want to believe that we broke our bond. Especially because Alex didn't feel it. I wanted to believe that there was still a chance for me. But now I see that I have ruined everything.
But if there was the slightest chance of Lydia surviving, I was willing to give my life for her.
I didn’t lie when I said I don’t remember how I screwed things up. I remember it was the first year that Mila went to school for the Fairies. Alex went with her then, we were 19 then. I was lonely without my twin, we were always connected. So I went to that club where humans live. If I had known that the biggest pack sluts was working there, I would never have gone. Natasha came to me with a drink in her hand, I remember telling her I had my beloved. But she said it was just one drink and we weren’t going to do anything wrong. All I remember after that was that I woke up with her in bed.
When my mother hit me with a slap, I was so ashamed, because of myself, because of her, because she thought she didn't raise me well, because of Lydia, who I let down, because of Alex, who didn't believe me.
"And now what?" My father asked.
"I will go." I said.
"Liam..."
"No dad, if there's the slightest chance I can save her I'll go, I screwed things up. I disappointed my mate, and worst of all, Alex doesn't even want to look at me. I will go and save her, if after that she does not want to see me, the decision is hers and I will accept her."
"Liam", Lady Alexia has come to me, "thank you for not wanting to give up on Lydia. I know a lot of things I can't tell you, the decision is up to Lydia, and I can't mess with fate."
"You don’t need to thank me, I don’t deserve it. I did something stupid. But I can still feel her heartbeats."
"You can?" Lady Alexia asked.
"Yes, yes, I can."
"Then your hopes are not lost Liam." Lady Alexia said.
