BRUSHED WITH THE PAST II

Max's eyes locked onto Emily's, and she could see the turmoil brewing inside him. He took a step closer, his voice barely above a whisper. "I think I've been blind to what's been right in front of me," Max said, his words sending Emily's heart racing. Emily's pulse quickened as Max's face drew closer. She could feel the warmth of his breath on her skin, and her lips tingled with anticipation. Was Max going to kiss her? Just as Max's lips were about to touch Emily's, a voice cut through the air. "Max, what's going on?" Rosa's voice was shrill, and Emily's heart sank. Rosa stood a few feet away, her eyes blazing with anger and hurt. Max turned to Rosa, a mixture of guilt and frustration on his face. "Rosa, I can explain," he said. But Rosa wasn't having it. "Explain what, Max? How you're standing here, about to kiss another woman?" she spat. Emily felt a wave of discomfort wash over her. She didn't want to be the reason for Max and Rosa's fight. "Rosa, please listen," Max tried again. But Rosa turned on her heel and stormed off, leaving Max and Emily standing there, awkwardly. Max sighed and rubbed his temples. "I'm so sorry, Emily. I didn't mean for that to happen." Emily shook her head. "It's not your fault, Max. You need to go after Rosa and talk to her." Max nodded and took off after Rosa, leaving Emily alone on the sidewalk. As she watched Max go, Emily couldn't help but wonder what would happen next. Would Max and Rosa work things out, or would Max finally realize his true feelings for Emily? Max caught up to Rosa and tried to explain himself, but she was too hurt and angry to listen. "I don't want to hear it, Max," Rosa said, her voice shaking with emotion. "I saw the way you were looking at her. I saw the way you were about to kiss her." Max sighed and ran his hands through his hair. "Rosa, I'm sorry. I don't know what came over me." Rosa's eyes flashed with anger. "You don't know what came over you? You're just like all the other men, Max. You think you can just do whatever you want and then apologize for it later?" Max looked taken aback by Rosa's words. "That's not fair, Rosa. I'm trying to be honest with you." But Rosa just shook her head. "I don't want to hear it, Max. I think we need to take a break." Max's face fell, and he looked like he'd been punched in the gut. "Okay, Rosa. If that's what you want." Rosa turned and walked away, leaving Max standing alone on the sidewalk. As Max watched Rosa go, he couldn't help but feel a pang of regret. He had hurt Rosa, and he didn't know how to make things right. But as he stood there, he couldn't shake the feeling that he had just dodged a bullet. He had been feeling trapped in his relationship with Rosa, and now he had the freedom to explore his feelings for Emily. Max walked back to his apartment, his mind reeling with thoughts of Rosa and Emily. He couldn't believe how things had escalated with Rosa, but at the same time, he felt a sense of relief. As he opened the door to his apartment, Max was greeted by the silence of an empty room. He walked over to the window and stared out at the city, his thoughts consumed by Emily. He couldn't stop thinking about the way she smiled, the way her eyes sparkled when she laughed. Max felt a pang of guilt for having feelings for Emily while still in a relationship with Rosa, but he couldn't deny the connection he felt with her. Just as Max was starting to drift off into thought, his phone buzzed with a text from Emily. "Hey Max, I just wanted to check in and see how you're doing," Emily's text read. Max's heart skipped a beat as he read the text. He felt a surge of excitement at the prospect of talking to Emily. "Hey Emily, I'm doing okay, thanks for checking in," Max replied, trying to sound casual despite the butterflies in his stomach. As Max waited for Emily's response, he couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation. He had no idea what the future held, but he knew one thing for sure: he wanted to explore his feelings... Emily's response came quickly. "I'm glad you're okay. I was worried about you after what happened with Rosa." Max's heart skipped a beat as he read Emily's text. She was worried about him? That had to mean something, right? "Thanks for worrying about me, Emily. That means a lot," Max replied, trying to sound casual despite the excitement building inside him. Emily's next text came quickly. "No problem, Max. I care about you." Max's heart soared as he read Emily's words. She cared about him? That was all he needed to hear. "Emily, can I see you tomorrow?" Max asked, his fingers flying across the keyboard. There was a pause before Emily responded. "I'd like that, Max." Max's heart skipped a beat as he read Emily's response. He couldn't wait to see her tomorrow. As he drifted off to sleep, Max couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement. He had no idea what the future held, but he knew one thing for sure: he was ready to take a chance on Emily. The next day, Max arrived at the coffee shop early, his heart racing with excitement. He had been thinking about Emily all night, and he couldn't wait to see her. As he waited, Max noticed a woman sitting in the corner, typing away on her laptop. She looked familiar, but he couldn't quite place her. Just as Max was starting to get impatient, Emily walked in, looking beautiful in a yellow sundress. Her hair was tied up in a ponytail, and her smile lit up the room. "Hey Max," Emily said, walking over to him. "Sorry I'm late." Max stood up, feeling a little nervous. "You're not late," he said. "I'm just early." Emily laughed, and they hugged each other tightly. Max felt a spark of electricity as their bodies touched, and he knew that he was in trouble. As they pulled back, Max noticed the woman in the corner staring at them. She looked familiar, but he still couldn't place her. "Who's that?" Max asked Emily, nodding towards the woman. Emily followed his gaze, and her expression changed. "That's Rosa," she said quietly. Max's heart sank. What was Rosa doing here?
