BRUSHED WITH THE PAST

1101 Words
As the night wore on, Emily and Max sat together, lost in their own little world. They talked, laughed, and gazed into each other's eyes. As the restaurant began to close, Max paid the bill and they stepped out into the cool Parisian night air. "Where would you like to go now?" Max asked, taking Emily's hand. Emily smiled mischievously. "I'd love to see the Eiffel Tower at night," she said. Max grinned. "Perfect," he said. They strolled hand in hand through the quiet streets of Paris, the Eiffel Tower looming above them. As they reached the tower, Emily gasped in amazement. The iron latticework was ablaze with twinkling lights, and the city sparkled below. Max took Emily's hand and led her to the edge of the observation deck. They stood together, gazing out at the breathtaking view. "I have one more surprise for you," Max said, his eyes shining with excitement. Emily's heart skipped a beat. What could Max have planned? Max stood up and made for the ally and was back on no time, but with nothing with him. “Are you forgetting something” Emily said with a smile “You were gonna show me another surprise” Emily concluded “Oh! Yes, I remember” Max chuckled “Emily.... meet Rosa my Queen and the woman after my heart” Emily's world came crashing down around her. She felt like she had been punched in the gut. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. "Rosa, this is Emily," Max continued, oblivious to Emily's inner turmoil. "We've been working together on a project." Rosa smiled warmly and extended her hand. Emily took it, trying to compose herself. "Nice to meet you," Emily said, forcing a smile onto her face. As they chatted, Emily couldn't help but sneak glances at Max. She couldn't believe he had a girlfriend. Why hadn't he mentioned it before? Emily felt a pang of jealousy, which she quickly suppressed. She couldn't let Max see how she really felt. As the evening wore on, Emily pretended to be happy for Max and Rosa. But inside, she was dying. She couldn't wait to get away from them and process her emotions. As the night drew to a close, Emily made her excuses and left, feeling like she was going to shatter into a million pieces. She walked home, trying to process her emotions. She couldn't believe she had developed feelings for Max, only to discover he was taken. When she arrived at her apartment, Emily collapsed onto the couch, feeling like she'd been punched in the gut. Why hadn't Max told her about Rosa? Had he been using her as a distraction? Emily's mind was a whirlwind of questions and emotions. She didn't know how to feel or what to do. As she sat there, trying to make sense of everything, Emily's phone buzzed. It was a text from Max. "Hey, I wanted to check in and make sure you're okay. You seemed a bit off tonight." Emily stared at the screen, unsure of how to respond. Should she pretend everything was fine, or be honest about her feelings? Days turned into weeks, and Emily tried to move on from her feelings for Max. She threw herself into her work and spent more time with her friends. But no matter how hard she tried, Emily couldn't shake the feeling that she'd lost something special. She missed Max's smile, his laugh, and his kind heart. One evening, as Emily was walking home from work, she ran into Max on the street. He was alone, without Rosa. "Hey Emily, how are you?" Max asked, his eyes sparkling with warmth. Emily felt her heart skip a beat. "I'm good, Max. Just busy with work." They chatted for a few minutes, catching up on each other's lives. Emily tried to keep the conversation light, but she couldn't help but feel a spark of attraction. As they said their goodbyes, Max turned to Emily with a curious expression. "Hey, can I ask you something?" "Sure, what is it?" Emily replied. Max hesitated, his eyes searching hers. "Do you believe in fate?" Emily's heart skipped a beat. What was Max getting at? Emily's mind racing, she replied, "I'm not sure. I've never really thought about it." Max nodded thoughtfully. "I've been thinking about it a lot lately. I feel like there's something missing in my life, like I'm meant to be with someone else." Emily's heart skipped a beat. Was Max having doubts about his relationship with Rosa? "Who do you think you're meant to be with?" Emily asked, trying to sound casual. Max looked at her, his eyes piercing. "I don't know. But I feel like I've been settling for someone who isn't truly right for me." Emily felt a flutter in her chest. Was Max talking about her? Max's words hung in the air, leaving Emily feeling both excited and terrified. She didn't know what to say or how to react. As they stood there, the tension between them became palpable. Emily could feel the chemistry between them, and she knew that Max could feel it too. Suddenly, Max reached out and gently brushed a strand of hair out of Emily's face. His touch sent shivers down her spine. "I'm sorry, Emily," Max whispered, his voice barely audible. "I think I've made a mistake." Emily's heart skipped a beat. What did Max mean? Was he talking about his relationship with Rosa? As Emily searched Max's face for answers, she saw something there that gave her hope. Something that made her wonder if maybe, just maybe, she still had a chance with Max.
