Chapter 4

Daniel “Look Lilian, this doesn't have to be hard,” I pleaded, as her bony hand pushed away the spoonful of overnight oats I'd been trying to feed her. She had taken to not eating in some pointless protest. She looked skinny and weak after five days of this. Her sunken eyes regarded me with all the hatred they could muster. Not much considering how emaciated she was. “Where are you going to go? You have no one. No one.” I was getting sick of her childish antics. “I'm literally the only one who gives a flying f**k about you. No one's even come looking for you. How do you think this is going to end?” I heard a sob escape her lips. She must have been too dehydrated to cry. “Hate it all you want but I'm all you have. Please just eat, this is pointless.” It pained me to see her so broken especially since I was doing what was best for her. Who knows what would have happened if I left her to her own devices that night. A solitary tear trickled down her face and I nearly smiled. Finally, I'd gotten to her.“I know you find it hard to believe, but I care about you – deeply. I hate seeing you like this.” “Then let me go,” she croaked. “To where? You know what, I'm sick of this. I offer you a roof over your head, food to eat and this is how you repay me? What did you have before I changed your life? You lived hand to mouth. You struggled everyday of your life.” Tears. The dam had finally broken. She looked utterly dejected. Good. “Leave if you like, but don't ever come back.” I stormed out of the room praying she wouldn't. I still needed her still and I wasn't letting her go anywhere but she didn't have to know that. I placed the bowl of oatmeal on the kitchen counter and sat waiting, doing my best to look as unbothered as I could. A few minutes later, out she came, trudging down the stair and taking the stool opposite from me. I slid the bowl over to her and watched as she weakly shoveled spoon after spoon down her throat. “I'm sorry.” She broke down. “I’m sorry, I'm sorry, I'm –” “Shhh.” I circled the counter and took hold of her skinny body, pulling her close to my chest. “It's okay. *** “I don't know why you still need her. Havn't you got last all the drama?” I was so sick of his recurring tantrums. I pinched the bridge of my nose, thinking of how I could make him see things my way. “It doesn't matter. Whoever these people are, they're watching – every step, they're watching.” I explained. “It would be obvious if I suddenly divorced my wife.” “Oh she's your wife now?” He sassed. “Yes Logan. Legally, she is.” He rolled his eyes and went back to chopping his vegetables. Of course, when all else failed, ignoring me was his trump card. Why did everybody think they knew better than me? “Look, it's only for a while,” I reasoned. “Besides it's not like anything's happening between us; I don't know why you're so jealous.”He suddenly stuck the sharp end of the knife into the chopping board and I knew I'd said something he didn't like. “You don't know why I'm jealous?” He slowly turned to face me. “You don't have the slightest idea?” “I don't know what you want me to say.” As many times as if backed down from a fight with him, this wasn't going to be one of them. “Look she's harmless. She's too much of a good person to try anything. Not that it'd work anyway,” I said, trying to dissuade him from the verbal assault he was clearly gearing up for. “She a beautiful woman, and you're a billionaire.” He crossed his arms. “So?” “So?” He laughed. “What do you think? As if you've never had a gold digger try anything with you. For all I know, she's planning to drug your food so she can…” he trailed off, looking down at my crotch. For some reason, I felt protective of her. That woman wouldn't hurt a fly and to think he would dare accuse her if something like this. “She's not digging for any gold. I practically had to force her to agree to this.” I spat. “And what do you think she'll do to me. You think tiny Lillian can lift me? And to try anything like that?” “Hey, I won't put anything past a determined woman.” “Look you need to stop all of this. And rhat look you give her whenever you come around, stop that too. She didn't ask for any of this, have some decency for f***s sake” “Oh, I'm the one without any decency? What about the gold digger you have holed up in your house? What about you who has a boyfriend but still decided to get married to that skank?” I was so sick of his nonesence. Clearly, he wasn't planning on seeing things my way anytime soon. “Your soup is burning,” I sighed before walking out. Maybe some time apart would do us some good. *** I opened the front door and there she was, with worry lines etched in her forehead. I gave her a questioning look. “I–I was just… nothing. Welcome back.” Is she worried about me?It'd been a couple days since she accepted her new situation and I found myself warming up to her presence around me even though she still seemed jumpy at times. She started to leave to go to her room but I wanted her to stay. “You had anything to eat?” I asked. “I had a sandwich.” “You and your sandwiches,” I joked walking over to my bar. “You drink?” “I… not really.” “Come on, one drink won't kill you. Sit with me.” I poured two glasses of Macallan 25 and walked over to the couch. She crept towards me, cautiously staring at the glass I extended to her. “Don't worry, it's not poisoned.” Her eyes grew wide. “No, I didn't think it was.” “Relax. Sit down.” I took a big sip, savouring the liquid velvet as it raced down my throat. She sat next to me and I watched her take her first rushed sip and gag. A chuckle escaped my lips watching her face contort. “Easy. Don't rush it.” She took a slower sip and still looked disgusted. “I guess it's not for everyone,” I said, taking another big sip. “It's not bad. I just…” she sighed and her shoulders dropped. “My mom hated alcohol. She always told me I'd end up in jail if I ever drank. Made me scares to even look at it.” “Even at college parties?” She glanced down at the floor. “I never went to college.” “Oh. I didn't know.” “It's fine. Maybe it was for the best. I've heard some crazy college stories.” “Yeah, it can get wild.” I smiled playing a highlight reel of my college parties in my head. “I'm sorry about you mom. I'm sorry about–”“Threatening her?” “Yeah.” I got up to refill my empty glass and ultimately decided to take the whole bottle back with I refilled both our cups and damn near downed my on the first sip. “I don't expect you to understand or accept my apology. It's just… my father built a legacy and if my secret got out, everything would be ruined. I was desperate.” She took a slow, measured sip. “You could have asked nicely." I nearly spit out my drink. “Yeah sure. That would have worked.” “I'm serious. I mean you were offering more money than I'd ever made in my life to pretend to be your wife. I'd have been stupid to not take the deal.” “You literally told me to go f**k myself.” “I didn't say that,” she giggled, polishing off her glass. “You were an ass. I kinda already hated you then so I wanted to stick it to you.” “Yeah, I get it. I hate myself sometimes.” The room went silent but it seemed like I could hear my heartbeat. The alcohol had taken hold of my system, clouding my judgement. I glanced over to her and caught her staring intently at me. Her eyes, I'd never really noticed them but the dazzled, and her lips, plump and inviting. Was I… attracted to her. Her eyes never left mine and our head moved closer and closer until we were so close I could smell the whiskey on her breath. “We shouldn't do this,” I whispered. “No, we shouldn't.” Our lips crashed, passionately dueling. Her warm tongue slipped into my mouth, exploring every inch of it. I pulled her onto me, wrapping my arms around her waist as her hands slipped around my neck. She smelled incredible, I couldn't get enough. She began grinding on the hardness in my pants and I groaned into her mouth. I had to have her. I lifted her up and she wrapped her legs around my waist. It was a struggled holding her while trying to inf my bedroom but we eventually found ourselves on my bed, slowly striping off layers of clothing until our naked bodies writhed around eachother. I thrust into her warm depths until she screamed in ecstasy. We stayed up all night exploring eachothers bodies like lovestruck teenagers.Morning came with a pounding headache. The light streaming in through the open windows nearly blinded me. I shifted and felt a warm body next to me. I figured Logan had come over sometime in the night and smiled. Of course, he couldn't stay mad. “Good morning,” I said turning over to find Lilian with my bedsheets pulled over her chest, staring at me like she'd seen a ghost My eyes grew wide in horror. What the hell did I do?
