Chapter 14 – Broadcast

At 10:07 a.m., the screen froze mid-upload. Emma’s hand hovered over the return key, ready to send the next round of files into the world. Then a new alert appeared—no name, no subject. Just a single message pinged across all three of their burner accounts: “Watch now. One hour.” —unknown sender Leo pulled up the feed. “Secure link. Encrypted, but shallow. They want us to see this.” Emma took a breath and hit Play. The screen flickered. Static. Then a slow, cold image sharpened into focus. Caleb, seated in a metal chair under a hanging bulb. Wrists bound. Lip split. Eyes defiant despite the bruising. A shadowed figure stood behind him, face hidden. A low voice cut in—mechanical, distorted. “You think the truth protects you. You think files and leaks and justice mean something. But truth doesn’t matter to people when they’re afraid.” The camera panned closer. Caleb looked up, directly into the lens. “Emma,” he rasped, “don’t stop. No matter what they do to me. You hear me? Don’t you dare let them win.” A gloved hand struck him hard across the face. He groaned but didn’t break. The voice returned. “One hour. Delete the leak. Publicly. Discredit your story, or we release this to every channel with your name attached to it—then we erase him, and you’re next.” The screen went black. Then the final words blinked: “One hour. Or he disappears forever.” ⸻ Silence fell over the room like smoke. Leo gripped the table’s edge. “We can’t give in.” Weatherby’s voice was quieter. “If we don’t, they kill him—and paint us as the reason.” Emma stared at the dark screen, rage burning behind her eyes. “I’m not deleting the truth,” she said slowly. “But we are going to answer them.” Leo turned. “How?” She stood. “We fight the way they never expect. We go louder. We make noise they can’t contain.” She grabbed her phone and began typing. Weatherby frowned. “What are you doing?” Emma didn’t stop. “Sending the video to a journalist I trust. She’ll release it—with our files—on a primetime segment. But not anonymously this time.” Leo’s jaw tightened. “That puts you in the spotlight.” “That’s the point,” Emma said, eyes clear. “They want me to hide. So now I show up. Publicly. On camera. With names and proof and the bruised face of the man they tried to silence.” A pause. “They think fear shuts people up. Let’s show them what happens when it lights a fire instead.” ⸻ In a corner of the warehouse, Caleb smiled through bloodied teeth. He didn’t know how. But he knew she’d never stay silent.
