For a moment Selina could not move and then automatically she put the pan containing the fish onto the stove and followed Quintus. She found him standing in the centre of the salon, staring into space as if he had no idea where he was or what he was doing. She went to his side. Her hands went out towards him instinctively, but she did not touch him, she only waited. “I can hardly believe it,” he muttered after a moment. There was silence again and then in a very small voice Selina said, “Now you have – everything you want and are so – important – if you wish to be – rid of me – I shall understand.” She tried to speak calmly, but there was an unmistakable sob behind the words.
