The park had always been lily's escape. Tucked between overgrown trees and Old wooden benches , it was one place where time seemed to slow. She sat with her sketchbook resting on her lap, nervously tapping her pencil against the paper . The autumn wind tugged at her sleeves as fallen leaves danced at her feet.
she wasn't sure why she'd agree to meet Ava here. Maybe it was curiosity. Maybe it was something deeper - something that stirred the second Ava smiled at her that morning.
"You came early," Ava said, startling her from her thoughts.
Lily looked up . Ava stood a few feet away , her curls bouncing as she moved , a messenger bag slung over one shoulder . Her smile was softer this time - less confidence, more real.
"I like the quiet before everyone shows up," Lily said, her voice barely rising above the breeze.
Ava sat beside her , not too close but close enough for lily to feel the warmth of her presence. For a moment, neither spoke. The silent between them wasn't uncomfortable -it felt like the kind of silence that didn't need to be filled.
"I used to come here with my mom when I was little," Ava said eventually . "Before things got ........weird ."
Lily glanced at her but didn't press. She understood what it meant to have things go unspoken.
"I used to come here with my dad," Lily replied . "Before he left."
Ava looked at her, surprised."He is gone ?"
Lily nodded, not trusting herself to say more . The ache of abandonment had never quite faded, only softened with time - like a bruise that never healed completely.
"My dad's still around ," Ava said after a while ."But sometimes I wish he wasn't ."
Lily turned to her, eyebrows lifting.
"He's ........not who people think he's ," Ava continued."He acts nice in public.Big church guy. Handshakes, smiles, the works. But at home........ I'm a disgrace to him."
Lily's stomach twisted. "Because you're ........?"
"Because I'm me ." Ava shrugged. " He says girls like me end up alone. Broken.Burning in hell, too,if you ask him."
Lily didn't respond . What could she say to something like that ?she couldn't fix it .But she could listen.
"I'm sorry ," Lily softly.
"Don't be ," Ava replied."He doesn't get to define me. Not anymore."
They Sat in silence again, this time heavier.Lily turned the page in her sketchbook and began to draw . Her lines were slow at first , unsure, but ever watched curiously.
"Is that.......me?" Ava looked, with a grin, leaning closer.
Lily hesitated,then nodded.
Ava laughed ." Made me look cooler than I am."
"You're cool ," Lily said without thinking, then blushed.
Ava tilted her head, her smile fading just a little . " You are not like anyone I've met before ."
"That's probably a good thing ," Lily said, half - joking.
"No," Ava said. "I like it."
lily looked up and met Ava's eyes . It felt like the world narrowed down to just one moment - the park, the cold air,the way Ava's eyes didn't look away.she felt something inside her shift. Something scary and thrilling at once .
"Do people know," Lily asked quietly.
Ava paused." About me ? some do. I've kissed girls at parties . Had crushes. I've been called names. some people stopped talking to me after ."
"And are you okay with that ?"
"I'd rather be real than be liked for someone I'm not."
Lily looked away, feeling a lump rise in her throat."I don't know if I'm that brave."
"You don't have to be brave all at once," Ava said."Just little moments. That's how it starts."
They sat there for a while, letting those words sink in.
Eventually, ava pulled out her phone."Okay, this project's not going to finish itself. Want to go over the plan?"
Lily nodded, though her mind was still on everything Ava had said. They spread out the papers, their knees bumping as they worked through ideas,Ava was smart, fast, and surprisingly organized . Lily mostly listened, offering quiet suggestions, sketching rough outlines for the visual part of their presentation.
The sun dipped lower, casting a golden hue across the park. Lily didn't want to leave. For once, she didn't feel like fading
into the background.
As they packed up, Ava turned to her again."Hey......are you doing anything this weekend?"
Lily hesitated."Not really."
"There is this art exhibit downtown . I have thought ......... maybe we could go.As friends. Or not just as friends,if that's ok."
Lily's heart leapt into her throat. She wasn't sure what this was - what they were - but she nodded anyway.
"Okay,"she said.
Ava grinned."cool. I'll text you."
And then she was gone, walking off with that easy confidence, leaving Lily on the bench with her sketchbook and a heart full of questions.
She looked down at her drawing of Ava _ half- finished ,lines soft and open. Just like this feeling what ever it is. New. Scary . Beautiful.
She didn't know what's coming next. But for the first time in a long time, Lily didn't feel alone .
